  • Wellbeing, Health & Fitness Thread

LU has a thread dedicated to this topic, one I'm very passionate about also. This thread is for sharing tips and fitness goals for the coming new year, whether it's mental or physical. Please keep this positive, uplifting and encouraging. I've been really inspired by Jack's 10km daily walks, Horrie's cycling, Izzy's running and Andy's yoga/meditation.

I'm doing 3 beach walks a day whilst the weather is cool during my holidays. I have a bike designed to go under my desk for when I want to pedal at home on the days where it's raining or too humid and I have small hand weights like the ones Ita Buttrose has been using.

I'm also currently reading Olivia Newton John's Livwise book and am up to the section on smoothies & juices.

I like to start my day with Richard Simmons or Effie pumping through my Beats so as to not wake the neighbours.

Aerobics Oz Style is my thing.

I love leg warmers, sweat bands and hi top velcro shows. Preferably Reebok

I used to go to Aerobic City at Wynyard after work when I was at Gowings in the 1990's. I'd do a circuit class and then still get home in time for Neighbours after getting the train home to Rosehill. Those were the days.

Do you remember the Rancan Sisters? They are still going strong with their fitness business after 40 years. My nephew used to mimic them but now he runs his own personal training business as his side hustle.

I got a little sunburned yesterday sitting near the lifeguards' station after taking a break during walk number 2. Went again early this morning and I haven't seen the surf so rough since Good Friday when it was like Point Break down there. I went for 3 walks that day too. I like walking in the wind as it's invigorationg and refreshing. Had a broken sleep as the helicopters were coming overhead at 12.30am and sirens started again. I like going to bed no later than 9pm and that's the best health and beauty tip I can share with anyone.

Ankle was to sore to do anything much today so it curtailed the walk i wanted to do around the Glebe waterfront, managed to do quite a few steps in Bunnings Alexandria this afternoon though, Will do a few mild ankle and leg stretches this afternoon but will hit the exercise bike again tomorrow.

Bates said he likes leg warmers, only one person could do justice to leg warmers. Olivia Newton John.

Actually, I'd rate Flashdance No 1 for leg warmers

                Yes true.

Olivia looked best in leg warmers in Xanadu but the Physical clip fitted the theme of the Health , Fitness and Wellness thread.

This exercise tip also belongs in the Dad Joke thread: Raise your left leg on New Year's Eve so that you will start out on the right foot....

Detoxing the brain and soul is just as important as doing it for the body. I have another 2 precious weeks of annual leave so will be using it wisely. No social media which is easy for me as I don't carry a smart phone. It's the easiest way to avoid negativity and anything that is toxic.

Imagine being able check the weather, transfer money, see if your favourite eatery is open, check your emails etc etc on your phone when you're away from your computer. Plus you have a torch, a calculator, a calendar, compass etc available whenever you need them. Smart phones are awesome and make life easier! You'll only get this once you try one. My mother in law is 80 and loves her iPhone.

That's really great about your mother in law and my sister, her husband, my uncle and his wife are all close to or are in their 80's. Even though I work in IT for one of the major banks, I returned all the phones they gave me before I went on leave. I just don't have the need for one and would rather spend my time doing other pursuits. I'm horrified at the expense they must incurr also.

I have a great little purple Nokia from JBHIFI and it's so economical. Good eye health is important to me and I like to live mindfully where I can. I check the weather by looking out my bedroom window (trust me, my left leg tells me if rain is coming, particularly my wonky knee ), my favourite eateries are all on my doorstep and I can check out opening hours on my walks. I actually make most of my meals at home from scratch anyway.

I only check my emails once a day via this laptop and as for the others you mentioned, I use my common sense and sharp brain...I also still take out cash once a week for the housekeeping money and am always the only one at the shops not in a panic when something 'goes offline'.

Smart phones are not that smart really. They have reduced IQ levels by 30%, created poor eye health and the average person spends 6 hours a day mindlessly scrolling. I have a designated time to check in with family and friends, usually early evening to make sure everyone is well, again via the laptop, plus Telstra gave me a special landline phone for medical reasons. The kind with the really big buttons that never goes 'offline'. If the modem goes down, I read a book and listen to music or go outside if it's daytime. I still occasionally listen to Roosters games via a small radio as it reminds me of my parents' day. As Jerry Seinfeld says "You gotta give people a chance to miss you"..

I had to explain to one of my thirty something managers about micro fiche too and how we used them in the bank back in the 90's..

Now I must go enjoy the rest of my holiday and it's nearly time for my 3rd walk today.

In the meantime, please enjoy new year Bates and I'll be back in March for season 2026 kickoff, with some new recipes for your food thread and my thoughts on bringing back the abacus.

Didn't feel like doing doing it but pushed myself and went to the Allianz Stadium gym, did 12 km on the bike which i feel good about because i wanted to stop before getting to 5 km. Then went to the pool and did some walking in the water and stretching and just a nice chill for almost 2 hours, ankle is still a bit tight but it feels quite a bit looser now.

The only way to know just how good smart phones are is to actually have one. Only then you can make an informed decision. I'll guarantee you will never look back!

My plan is $70 per month for unlimited calls and data. I use my phone to hotspot the internet to my computer and smart TV. No need for a landline! How does that compare to what you're spending on your phone and internet?

I still am better off financially than what you quoted to me as you are not fully aware of my medical allowances/conditions and what work covers for me.

I already explained that I handed back 2 smart phones to my work place. I have a sensory disability therefore I don't have a use for one. You've lost your guarantee unfortunately as I don't think you read my post in full.

My parents raised me to have a hightened sense of self awareness. (My mother called it having your wits about you.)

To explain this a little bit more, I see, feel and hear things differently to the average human and my family, friends and employer all recognise this. . For further context, I just spent the past 2 years working undercover in a task force on a $20 million dollar fraud project along with my former boss who was in the NSW police force. My BS detector is in-built therefore I need very little devices in my life.

Again, I will say that I'm trying to take some time away from all social media as I live on Bondi Beach and would rather spend my time helping our local charities. The donated items I'm getting from some companies will be coming soon and I'll be making up gift bags to donate to our local homeless shelter and also Lifeline. That in itself is the best wellbeing act anyone can do. Help others instead of thinking abour ourselves all the time.

Bates, you seem to be a good judge of the characters on here so I’m leaving you and Horrie as custodians of this thread during the remainder of the offseason. It would be great if it could be kept going for the sole purpose for which it’s been intended. If they get out of line, direct them to my autosignature for some enlightenment.

Bye for now and happy new year to you and your family.
