Christmas Day in the fifties at my place was no tree same as most people, canned ham and a salad consisting of tomatoes, cucumer, lettuce, mayonaise no dressing, 2 bottles of Resch's Sheaf for mum and dad. Cheese was Craft. Ice cream and canned peaches and we were off to the beach the bro and I. Other kids in the street did the same. Presents were modest and forgettable, usually things you needed. Wages were poor and there were relatively few consumer goods anyway. I quickly learned not to have high expectations about gifts and that has expanded to expectations about anything. That's my Chritmas message Low Expectations = Happiness.

The prosperity gap between then and now is so impressive. The Christmases that I attend these days are lavish affairs, food and drink forever and, for the most part, nourishing families.

That's the quintessential eastern suburbs gift bag right there. You could go on the Real Househusbands of the East with that get up.

My boss gave me a lovely Royal Albert tea cup with hand painted pink flowers on it that Hyacinth Bucket would approve of. My lovely and thoughtful friend gave me a small hand held fan for when I get hot under the collar when the refs start stitching us up again and my family sent me gift cards from Melbourne which I'll use to buy a new handbag.

This woman is truly a girl power role model..check out what she does with her handbag..this will be me chasing Souths fans one day..

My 2 dogs gave me $50 and lovely card.

" Dear Big Dog, wishing you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year etc etc"

It amazes me just how smart and thoughtful dogs are these days.
