Wow GOWINGS! A blast from the past but a great Australian company- i used to love going there when i travelled into the city.So much diverse stock.Originally posted by redwhiteblue View PostI've been getting lesser known brands of butter from Harris Farm plus I like the Great Ocean Road one when it's on special. One would hope it's Australian made.
. My Edgell chick peas in the cupboard are Australian. I told my brother in law about the Black & Gold cheese from IGA as he and my sister go to their local one sometimes. It tastes better than Bega and it's good for toasted sandwiches to take to work. My local IGA has a lot of Australian made products under the Community Co label.
I'm just waiting on 2 deliveries this afternoon then I'm going up to Westfield as my new boss told me about TK Maxx. One of the guys I worked with at Gowings years ago when we were in our 20's is now very high up in their Victorian office. Apparently they do have some Australian made products like soap and skincare so I'll take a look. They have Martha Stewart homewares..my queen..! But if I go into that section, I may never come out..I'm a sucker for anything home related. Bed, Bath & Table have limoncello scented drawer liners & sachets but they are made in China..
I also purchased shares in Gowing Bros on the ASX in the 90s- i was that impressed with them! As soon as i got them they tanked and i decided to sell to cut my large loss.....and as soon as i did they rocketed up. Go me!

That was my first job when I moved to Sydney in 1989. I'd moved to live with my sister and her family at Rosehill and I'd just gone to the job notice board at Granville and the guy gave me the job description on a small white piece of cardboard. There was no Seek or LinkedIn back thenOriginally posted by Random Rooster View Post

. I had wanted to go home and change my clothes but the guy said to me that I was already well presented so I went on the train and was interviewed right in the middle of the shirt department. I got hired on the spot and ended up running that whole department myself..That's how i ended up opening my own shop in Charing Crosss all those years later and quite a few customers said it reminded them of Gowings. I'm still friends with people I worked with back then. That's another reason why I tried to stock as much Australian made stock myself. Mum used to work at a shirt and PJ factory in Redfern and my auntie worked at a shoe factory nor far. They lived in Campsie and would just get on the train and cut through the oval to get to work. Many years later when I would come as a child in the early 70's, we'd go to Bankstown Square sometimes to go shopping. I remember you said you grew up there.

If we came to school looking like hippies, the sergeant would send us to Gowings for a $5 short back and sides.Originally posted by Random Rooster View Post

I went to TK Maxx for the first time yesterday and was really impressed with the amount of Austtralian made products,. I only bought a box of 3 room sprays for $17 with really nice fragrance combinations, made in Melbourne. By contrast, another shop close by had made in China ones for $22.99 per bottle.
I also got some Bulla Murray St ice cream delivered last week to put away for holidays as it was half price. New flavour combinations of pistachio/raspberry and boysenberry swirl. I always read addresses on products to see where they are actually made and have been doing this for years. Murray St is in Colac, Victoria. I get annoyed when I see that Bondi Sands is made in Port Melbourne. I don't know how they get away with that as they sell it overseas and to me that is misleading. I remember when Mark Bouris had The Apprentice on TV and one of the teams got into trouble for selling 'Bondi Pies' up here in the mall as they were actually made in a factory in Alexndria. Speaking of, I have my gluten free spanakopita to have now for breakfast from the Wholegreen Bakery over there as a long weekend treat. Cheers to hardworking Australian manufacturers.Last edited by redwhiteblue; 11-08-2025, 07:50 AM.

I was 'dating' somebody whose friend's parents owned the Charing Cross. Solid pizzas but the group were too immature and they spent all their time talking about Serbia v Croatia (my friend had 'multicultural' parents and kept switching sides between them). I ultimately didn't care and just wanted to eat pizza...Originally posted by redwhiteblue View PostThat's how i ended up opening my own shop in Charing Crosss all those years later and quite a few customers said it reminded them of Gowings.

I had my hair cut there once as they did have female barbers working there. Quick, cheap and easy when it was stocktake sale time and none of us had time to do much. I thought of you yesterfday ism. I bought a really lovely cardigan for the office from the Japanese store Uniglo and it was made in Vietnam. The staff are all very polite and they keep the stock very orderly. I was a bit overwhelmed by the lights etc when I went it, but I was assisted straight away by an older lady who was really kind. It makes me happy to see different generations working in one place..just like our footy team next year..Originally posted by ism22 View Post

When I shut the shop at the end of the financial year 2011, I had sold my big wooden table I had in the middle of the floor to some guys who ran a pizza place there where they used flour from Italy. it was directlyt across the road from Charing Cross Pizza, near the Legion Club. I had originally bought it from Vinnies down the road and the pizza place was down that way too, so I was happy the table stayed on the street.Originally posted by ism22 View Post

I remember the name of the pizza place now. It's Vacanza at 261 Bronte Road. They are still there and opened up in Surry Hills now also.Originally posted by ism22 View Post

I still keep a stash of Weis bars in the freezer even though they are no longer made in Toowoomba. The company was bought out buy Unilever and they transferred the manufacturing to Minto. The Toowoomba factory was sold to a local family who created more jobs as they run a cold storage facility and food processing. Unilever donated a million dollars from the factory sale to set up the Weis community fund to use for ongoing agricultural innovations.

Weis fruito used to be my favourite ice cream from my corner shop in Paddington, there was somehing exotic about them then. I remember also from the supermarket Devondale used to have Pink Pussy Cats in an 8 pack, they were similar to the Bulla raspberry flavoured splits today.Originally posted by redwhiteblue View PostI still keep a stash of Weis bars in the freezer even though they are no longer made in Toowoomba. There is a lovely childhood memory for me tucked away somewhere in my mind. I also remember a fizzy apple soft drink in a can called Apla. I have a strong memory of being taken around the Campsie shops when I was around 3 or 4 by my auntie's lovely English naval husband as he tried everywhere to buy it for me. His name was Peter and the Arabic version of the name is Boutros. Every time we went through St Peters on the train, he'd say we are at St Boutros..I was only in grade 2 when he died but I will never forget him. I have lots of photos of us together and a silver locket he gave me. He was the first person I knew who had a tattoo. It was of an anchor on his arm.
I found the Apla cans on ebay

Another plug for another town near where I grew up. This is Goodiwindi Cotton. Whilst the garments are made offshore, they use Qld cotton and have a recycling program.
