  • Buy Australian!

Im one of these people who will always buy Australian made when its available because 1. We should always support our own 2. Most times the product is of better quality 3. A lot of products are comparible in price

What pisses me off the most is people who rant " we need to be tough on China" or some other Asian country- then go out and buy something cheaper made in these countries to save a dollar. I dont rant about it-i do something about it!!

So if anyone has an thoughts on where they can or do buy Australian over a overseas competitor then shoot away

As im the cook in then household i will always look to buy Australian made products first..... & prawns/seafood that are sourced anywhere besides from Australian waters are a no go in my house. My kids love to have a crack at me and say "hey Dad, i overheard 2 of the prawns talking Vietnamese before you cooked them up in the risotto"

Another area is paint. My eldest boy wanted his unit painted- i said yep il do it on one condition- we use Haymes paint-100% Aussie made and owned-and the BEST quality. Dulux/British paints is owned by Japanese, Taubmans US and Wattyl Denmark.

    Anyone got any others?

Perfect timing as I'm just about to do my online grocery shopping. I get cleaning products and bath and body products such as toothpaste, handwash, soap bars (because I am not a Vermin fan) all made here. So that means no to Palmolive and yes to brands like Freshwater Farm and Beach Road Naturals. All are very affordable at major supermarkets and chemists. Grants of Australia is my toothpaste brand and Harris Farm stocks that along with the supermarkets.

Slightly hard if you are buying a new car.
As for sea food, there is only one way to go, we have the best seafood in the world here in Australia, unfortunately if you are dining out at the local Chinese you are generally going get imported prawns and squid.
Would love to see Henny Penny outlets back in Sydney and country NSW as it is one of the few Australian owned fast food outlets.

Shampoo and some skin care products i buy from Sanctum which is made in northern NSW.

Random Rooster I have one of the original Fluicers purchased after reading how K-mart ripped off a Brisbane man's design. I use it all the time and just squeezed my morning lemon juice to have with hot water. I didn't mind paying the full price as I wanted the real product and not a cheap copy.

A friend's husband works in the national security space and won't buy anything from China. Hint... he's a farking bore and in many cases either can't find an alternative, or can't say for certain that what he's buying doesn't contain anything sourced from there.

          My approach is...

          - A lot of Australian stuff is shyte quality. Also, I'm not some idiot nationalist who believes we should be a hermit state. Personally I see no point in propping up unviable products out of misplaced nationalism.

          - Sites like Temu can go fark themselves. That's just product dumping and most of the stuff is dangerous / non-compliant so I'm not interested in that kinda just.

          - In general I try to buy fresh ingredients for my food or grow it myself (have got a massive veggie garden). I'm happy to pay extra so that I can shop at a good butcher, fishmonger or greengrocer. Similarly I love buying locally made pastries and beers/spirits. Though again... do I pay $100 buying a bottle of local rum that tastes like molasses? No, but I'll totally pay $15 for a pint of locally made Barley Griffin at the Baso.

          - That said I'm Italian, my daughter's Japanese and my son's Vietnamese. Variety is the spice of life and my life would be farking boring if I excluded such things. I pity grumpy old farks who can't enjoy variety, particularly when such reasoning is grounded in beliefs obtained from some stupid commercial radio show spruiking nonsense.

Also a lot of stuff even though made in Australia, the companies are owned by multinationals overseas and as Ism pointed out somethings that you want there is no Australian made alternative.

Certain things though i will only buy Australian, fresh fruit and vegetables which a lot of the time i will pick up at a local farmers market. Seafood, i like to catch my own when i get the chance to go fishing but will only buy the fresh Australian product from the fish monger, i know if i go to my local cheap and cheerful Chinese i am most likely getting imported prawns and squid, also with canned tuna is 99% of time it is from Thailand and canned salmon from Canada, like wise with tinned tomatoes, most are from Italy and superior to the Australian produced canned varieties so there are plenty of pantry staples which are not widely produced here or there are superior imports.I find i prefer the Australian produced Olive Oil now instead of the Spanish or Italian varieties.

Was good to see Bega bring Vegemite back from being foreign owned back to an Australian owned company, ice cream wise for home i buy Bulla and Norco products mainly but not because they are Australian owned but because i like their flavour and taste.

I used to stock this brand of Australian made clothing for men in my shop. Amanda Keller's husband Harley Oliver was my best customer for the loud shirts. Glad to see the brand is stronger than ever and has a retail shop at Mosman these days.

I understand and respect what Ism is saying as I have spanish olives, Italian soap and bodywash I am saving as it's so luxurious including the packaging and I have tea from Poland. It's the everyday staples where I will always buy Australian over cheap stuff just for the sake of it. Work's economists were quoted just this week saying if every Australian household diverted $100 per week to buying more Australian products where possible, it would create an extra 36,000 onshore jobs and increase the GDP.

But not every household can afford to do so and that should also be respected.

My missus loves Sanctum! They are a great example of a Aussie company that supply exceptional products with decent pricing.

I always use San Remo pasta and Sunrice for cooking- ill even bypass anything made in Italy- but the wog in me means i always do my own sauce-with only Aussie ingredients.

When Woolies have Cobram olive oil on special at half price i always stock up- so much better than imported olive oil at supermarkets. Bega cheese- 100% Oz owned and produced and excellent quality.

Frozen veges-dont buy McCains because they are usually "Packed in NZ from NZ and imported ingredients".....and at Woolworths for McCains frozen winter greens is $6.80 for 1kg.....while the same product 100% Australian Winter veg mix is $5.20kg- its a no brainer but people think because of the name McCains its a superior product when its not, you're paying more- and its not supporting our farmers 1 cent to boot

Stay away from Woolworths "Essential" Frozen food brands "Packed in Belgium from multiple regions" - no thanks

Absolutely! I get was ISM is saying-you cannot avoid everything that is made overseas.

Im saying there are many Australian owned and made goods that reasonably priced and are overlooked. Eg. Golden Circle 450g canned sliced beetroot $6 kg "Made in NZ from local and imported ingredients" .....Edgells sliced beetroot 825g "99% Australian Ingredients" $4.61kg. Sure its a bigger can-but it's still cheaper and its local.

Sanctum products are great, i stock up when they have their sales on to cut down on the postage costs. While i use fresh tomato when making certain dishes like the lamb meatballs in risoni i always have tinned tomatoes in the pantry, just easier when you want a quick spag bol, i just find the Italian ones superior , i find the Analisa or Cucina Matese brands good, have tried the Australian Ardmona ones but found them very light on flavour.

Yes with Olive Oil, i buy either Red Island or Cobram Estate, depends on which is on special, i do lean towards the Red Island more but Cobram is very good.

The only frozen veges i buy are peas and do buy the Coles brand ones which are grown and packed in Australia.

Ive never heard of it. The Anko $5 version is shit- not comparing lemons with lemons ( pun intended!). Where did you get yours from?

How do you go about pickling it?

Just boil the whole beetroots till they feel tender enough to put a skewer in it, let the beetroot cool and then peel them ( gloves are handy ) and cut into slices, the pickling mix is just white vinegar and sugar, just dissolve the sugar into the vinegar, the amount of sugar depends on how sweet or savoury you want it to taste, then just place the beetroot in the pickling liquid and store in an air tight jar or container in the fridge, i find it so much nicer than the canned variety and it lasts for ages.
