Another amazing moment at White City was the 1980 final of the women's tournament. Wendy Turnbull saved 7 match points, including 5 in the the deciding set tie break after trailing 2-6 in the tie break, to beat Pam Shriver and win her first major tournament on home soil, it was helter skelter in the tie break as Turnbull fought back for an amazing win. This came after she had lost the Australian Open final the week before to Hana Mandilkova in straight sets, to get through to the final of the NSW Open she ran into Hana in the semis but beat her this time in three sets.

Oh Horrie !!!! I remember watching this game on tv. Such fluctuating emotions in that tie break ( thinking how could she win nothing after losing Aus Open then beating her conquerer in this tournament ) and then joy when the Rabbit staged a remarkable comeback to winOriginally posted by horrie hastings View PostAnother amazing moment at White City was the 1980 final of the women's tournament. That was Wendy's maiden title singles win in Australia, she was so relieved after the match saying it looked like she was going to be bridesmaid again.Originally posted by Andrew Walker View Post

Yes up two sets and was beatenOriginally posted by rented tracksuit View PostThe demon had a shocker for the ages last night.
Frustrating to watch.
Looking forward to watching the young Canadian Victoria Mboko who has been pretty much sweeping all before her this year in 2nd tier tournaments Came through the qualifiers here not losing a set and has yet to lose a set in the first two rounds She plays the Chinese girl Zheng which will be a good test for her Though an outsider in the betting she is capable of an upset in this Her only losses this year being to top ten ranked players Gauff in three sets and another whose name escapes me for now but also in three setsLast edited by Andrew Walker; 05-30-2025, 05:27 PM.I respect all our moderators here. I'm only 4 minutes into this 3 part documentary series on SBS on Demand and I have goosebumps already. Tennis aside, great moments in history being created. I'm not sure if Horrie has seen this but Miriam Margoyles is one of the interviewees.
This is the era I loved most. It's only available to stream for the next 3 weeks so I'm watching one episode each day over the weekend. Originally it was from PBS in the US.

Farewell Stan, you were a great ambassador for tennis and one of the most liked and respected players, you are going to be missed. I admit i teared up a bit in his farewell speech.

The Gods of Tennis episode 3 was about how Martina set the standard in terms of being the first to start lifting weights in the gym and having a proper staff/entourage with nutritionist etc.Originally posted by Bates View PostTennis players are incredible athletes imo!
I just admire anyone who can be outside in scorching heat for that long, let alone perform athletic abilities in a solo sport.
So many great names from the past in the series..Gabriela Sabatini is just one of them.."Never sacrifice your class to get even with someone who possesses none. Their karma will come and if you are extra lucky, you get to watch."
