  • The hip drop doesn’t exist

Just another made up rule from the NRL

With all this supposed sanitation of dangerous/illegal tackles the last few years the game is going the way of touch footy.

Soon there will be a weight limit of 80kg or less can only play the game.

      I totally agree.
I concede it looks dangerous when you slow it down to super slow motion but almost every one I’ve seen I’ve thought to myself, what else can the player do.

Soon it will turn into oztag lol

Yeah, don't think I'm being bias here but it just seemed that Nat basically fell over when the Sharks player ducked into him. No malice, no intent, and just landed on his ankle. Pretty unfortunate call, and Blocker was raving about how we'll hear more about it lol.

I reckon Jackson Hastings might disagree with you , he got his leg broke by almost exactly what Nat butcher just did

What the **** is butcher meant to do there? If a player is half through your tackle now you pretty much have to let him go now

One thing’s for sure is we won’t get many penalties for this tackle because our players won’t lay down when it happens to them.

They look like a thousand other normal tackles.

Even hater Tallis said as much, he loses his upper body grip and could do little else.

Yet another joke ruling to put our lot on the back foot early in the game.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Hahaha, I’m glad you posted that, I’ve got no idea either.

Same. I think the theory is that they don't like a 3rd man taking out a guy's legs when he's standing in a tackle because the 'hip drops' unexpectedly and two blokes fall on him in an awkward position that makes leg injuries more likely?

In reality it's yet another overly-prescriptive rule because the NRL doesn't trust the refs to determine what 'dangerous contact' is, and insists on doing ad-hoc crackdowns following media coverage of various injuries.

To know what one REALLY is you'd have to have the latest copy of the NRL's rulebook (to know not only a common example, but every little teeny tiny technicality of it) and attend a coach's briefing session run by Anal Guy, where he tells you what specifics he'd like you to target as part of the current crack-down.

                            This from the Telle,

                            DROP THE DEBATE

It’s been the most hotly debated topic this year with inconsistent rulings leaving fans more and more confused each week, but it seems the footy world can finally agree on a hip-drop decision after Nat Butcher was sent to the sin bin in the first half.

The opening six rounds have seen a number of contentious calls with mass confusion over what constitutes a penalty, sin bin or suspension.

It was somewhat ironic that Butcher was penalised metres away from where Sharks skipper Dale Finucane was sin binned and ultimately banned for three weeks for a hip-drop tackle against the Warriors two weeks ago.

That decision was debated all across the country, but this one was clear cut with the Roosters back-rower dropping his body weight on Briton Nikora’s lower legs, leaving the Sharks edge forward in agony.

The Sharks scored eight points while he was off the field, and they added another six when Nikora crashed over later after Brandon Smith was marched for a high shot on Cameron McInnes.

Joke of a penalty let alone a sin bin
