That performance the other night reminded me of that rd1 "effort" against Newcastle in 22. We all know how last season unfolded with losses to the Knights, Bulldogs and the Dragons destroying our year. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on Friday night. We made a very average Manly side look like future premiers. Robinson should've had them primed the other night, instead we were fed that rubbish that we have all seen before. People will point out that we had a lot of star power missing but manly were also missing turbo and dce. There will be no excuses when Rd 1 comes around. We need to make a statement in that game, especially with our d. So far our d has been abysmal. My enthusiasm for 23 dropped about 3 levels after seeing the rubbish they dished out.

At any given time in any of our trials, something in the order of half the players we had on the field won't be picked in first grade for Round 1.

For that reason alone I can't see it makes much sense to be feeling downcast about the season ahead already. At least wait until you see how we go in the actual comp, with our proper side.

I'm not worried at all based on that game.
Our Top 17 focused on a proper season game would be way more effective.

Two things I did get out of it from picking a R1 team are I have no idea who will be the other wing and Wong is nowhere near ready for a permanent first grade spot yet.

Agreed. Friday night was very disappointing.. Robbo obviously not happy about it either.

The thing that worried me the most was our ruck defence. We looked very vulnerable up the guts.

Means very little. Judge us after we play real footy in NRL competition.

Losing to Redcliffe is not an option.

Manly are not an average side though and will be right in the mix for a top 8 spot

It was a trial after all so wait till the comp starts and see how they progress week to week as obviously they won't be at their best 1st game and for x amount of games as they build into the season - but they certainly need to be consistent over the 80 minutes at least and win games.

Last year it was they were underdone as a result of a disrupted pre-season and the weekly issue of finding the key to unlock the attack for 2/3 or so of the season until the Key was found - Keary and Walker being switched to play their best positions and Watson playing as a running forward which will be missed until or if he returns this season

They will probably have players underdone this season too due to them coming back late to pre-season training so they will need to adjust for this and as Robbo was saying getting back to the basics will be the focus.

I know it won't happen, but if we were looking for a new centre to replace Momo and co. we could do a lot worse than Mark Percival from St Helens. He seems like he has a decent amount of speed, not afraid to do the tough hit ups, good in defence, solid under the high ball and as a bonus is a good goal kicker. Just my 2c worth.

Also - did anyone notice in the game when we were on our line defending, Teddy absolutely give it to Paulo? Paulo made a tackle and Ted was trying to point him to cover a gap and Paulo wasnt showing any awareness of Ted at all and so Ted blew up.

Something along the lines of “ Jaxson Here! Here! ****ing come here! **** me “

We gotta iron crap like this out quick.

No coach, in any sport, at any level, anywhere in the world should have their side primed for a trial match.

Anthony Barnes will most likely need to fix that

Not true. 2002 and 2013 we were on fire during the trials, it was a sign of things to come. I can't stand Robbo's belief of building a season, it was disastrous last year. Sure premierships aren't won in March but if you don't win the games that you should your just pushing sh1t uphill for the rest of the year. I want to see a very switched on Roosters in rd1.

I understanding the building the season methodology but of course you want to be winning games as well.

I didn't understand then and still don't even now why the changes were not made earlier last year - Walker to half and Keary back to 5/8 and Watson used as a running forward instead of being wasted as second dummy half and only there to basically just pass the ball.

People have a different interpretation of stats and some like them like me and some pay no attention to them and consider them irrelevant. - If you win stats don't matter

But things have to change though in many areas of the basics of the game which I hope is what Robbo means - Increase Set completions / less Errors /less Missed tackles / Improve Ill discipline (Penalties and sin bins) etc

Certainly playing a consistent 80 minutes game week to week would be the goal they should be looking at achieving by concentrating on and improving the basics

There were far too many lapses in concentration and intensity during games last year as well and not sure why this occurs but it seemed to be infectious across the whole team and not just only individuals.

Do they hit the brick wall in games - not sure why this happens - some say it's when the bench players come on but would that affect the whole team - not sure
