  • Christian Welch said it best on Offsiders at the weekend.

This is a game throwing a ball about and making a few tackles, scoring tries. A game.

If Angus prioritises his health all Roosters fans should back him.

Why does everyone feel the need to tip-toe through these sorts of issues and why does everyone think the employer has a duty of care? I'll tell you why, it's because we live in a cotton wool society where fainting couches must now be provided at birth so the pearl clutching do-gooders can feel good about themselves. Suddenly it's all about player welfare when it comes to mental issues, but on another hand, we all hear about the therapeutic benefits of going out there and being physical and active. So which one is it? Do we keep Angus in bubble-wrap or do we tell him to snap out of it, get over his dramas and get out there and justify his massive pay packet?

If everyone got paid time off work for every real or imagined ailment, nobody would turn up for work. But then I suppose that's what socialists are trying to do to the world isn't it?
      Okay…bipolar….just snap out if it.

But we have to tiptoe around all these issues in our nappy wearing world.

I hope someone is doing an investigation about his condition, how it happenned and if there is any potention recovery in the near future.

If there isn't then we should be able to use the money we paid him to get someone else.
Id reckon he just saw his local Gp down at the clinic. Apparently, he told him he thought he had some sought of mental health condition like bipuolar so the club in there wisdom took the Gps word for it and off we go ay.
Or maybe just maybe he has seen all the specialists , they have diagnosed him with Bipolar and are treating him accordingly . Apparently, the club decided not to give me and you a call because IT NONE OF YOUR F&CKING BUISNESS

        • The one thing I love about our club more than anything is the way it leads the way in player care and welfare.
They have led the way on how to treat concussion time and time again.
They have led the way on not staying down and milking penalties as it’s not in the spirit of the game and now they will lead the way around how to support a player who is suffering with a mental illness.

The reason we haven’t had any updates and the media continues to speculate is because it is none of our business and the club only has the player as the main priority.

Let’s leave it up to the medical professionals, Uncle Nick, Robbo and most importantly Angus as to when he returns.
          Enough said.

            Indeed.
Though, a call has to be made at season's end surely.
            Medical retirement...maybe.

Totally agree. This year could be a write off but I’m sure player and club will sit down if required to discuss the future.

Surely Christian Welch was too busy telling everyone about his MBA or polishing up his negotiating skills for his future career as a union rep or ASX CEO to be on tv promoting himself

All I know is speed and strength win in rugby league. Angus is a great player because he has lots of both and we miss him at both ends of the field

A GP isn't qualified to make a bipolar call- if they suspect it could be bipolar then it's referral to a psychiatrist. At that point a decision is made whether you can be treated as a outpatient- but for some who are a danger to themselves or others....or feel they won't improve as a outpatient- then its best to go to a mental health clinic. I'm sure the club has been informed about his condition by the appropriate doctors....however beyond that its, as you said "NONE OF YOUR F&CKING BUSINESS"- it's a matter for Angus and his family. I'm sure he will be ok and is being looked after by the right people.Whether or not he returns to footy it doesn't matter- it's up to him to put his health first.

Luke said he is getting the help he needs and texting him after the game and started training by himself this week so it’s good to know he’s up and about regardless of the state of his mental health. Just hope he can manage it sufficient to live as normal a life as he can

                      • There seems to be many in our society who are ignorant to depression. There have been many who have taken their lives including quite a few players and commentators over the years. To even complain about the impact Gus has on our cap or to smack him across the head and snap out of it says a lot about those individuals intellect.

It was encouraging to hear Keary say that Gus is watching our games, texting the boys and started his own personal training program and gives hope that he will play again at some point and hopefully this year.

                            • So many ignorant views and comments on this thread and I don't mean that in a nasty way. Just saying there are some big voices calling for the club to throw the baby out with the bath water based on assumptions made with a lack of knowledge on the subject and the individual situation. Also based on a premise of wrong doing by Angus that to be honest if we honestly found out the real truth about players in the game that have taken illicit substances and kicked them all out we wouldn't be able to field 4 teams in the nrl! it's a large part of modern society.

He didn't kill anyone, bash anyone, rape, defraud, steal, or any other egregious crime. He did represent the Roosters and well enough to be picked multiple times to represent his state and country. He's performed at a very high level for our club, won a premiership with the club.

He did set up multiple charities and organisations to help those in need and the under privileged in society.

He has likely done all of this whilst struggling with this disorder. He is and has been a great example of a high functioning individual with a mental illness. How many of us can say we have set up and worked for charities that help the underprivileged or disadvantaged to the extent Angus has done - and at such a young stage in our lives whilst extremely busy with our careers and just our own lives and having a good time for ourselves?

Personally I applaud this guy for what he has done and the obvious difficult circumstances he has done it under. What an unselfish and well rounded individual.

Did he take illicit substances - we don't know - but so what if he did. It doesn't take away from anything he has achieved or will achieve in the future. If you want to chuck him out for that then you will be chucking out half of modern day society.

Gus is getting the help he needs to overcome or learn to live with this disorder - he deserves the space and time to do that just like a guy who tears his ACL deserves his time to rehab and get back to the paddock.

I can't wait to see him come back and wear our jersey again and perform at the level he is capable of and has already done for us. I'm sure he will. He's a good human Gus and I wish him all the best.

Yes the club would have done an "investigation " into the situation and they are supporting his recovery - let them who are in the know make the decisions they have with the relevant information and trust that they have done so. It's better they make the decisions than anyone else who is simply speculating with only one tenth (at most) of the necessary visibility needed to do so.

Well said. Mental illness is real. It’s not a pretend diagnosis you can just snap yourself out of by being brave and tough and ‘acting like a man’. That’s such a cliche and why we end up with terrible consequences when those diagnosed with it feel they can’t live up to the standards that an ignorant society demands.
