Roosters mourn death of Keith Steel and Bruce Stewart

The Sydney Roosters have been saddened to learn of the death of Life Member and former Leagues Club and Football Club Chairman, Mr Keith Steel.

Mr Steel’s long association with the club began in 1930 with his role as an Easts Line Boy.

A foundation member of Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club, Mr Steel spent almost 20 years as a Director of Easts Leagues (from 1973-1992) and was a Director of the Football Club from 1983-92. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors across both Easts Leagues Club and the Sydney Roosters from 1990-92.

In a sad week for the club, the Sydney Roosters also mourn the death of former player Bruce ‘Larpa’ Stewart who died earlier this week.

One of the great characters of the game and a crowd favourite, Mr Stewart played for the Roosters from 1967-68, scoring 10 tries from his 24 appearances on the wing. Mr Stewart’s son Corey also played for the Roosters, beginning his career at the club in the early 1990s.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the wonderful families of Mr Steel and Mr Stewart.

    Sad day for the club..

Larpa was a great guy, always had a smile on his face..I'm not old enough to have seen him play but have heard many stories about how good he was in a Roosters side recovering from a spoon season where we didn't win a game..

My step father played against him & described him as Chicka Ferguson or Nathan Blacklock like..His son Corey played 1st Grade for us in the early 1990's too..

Keith Steel was always "Mr Steel" when i was a kid but he was a nice old guy too & my condolences go out to his family..

Both men helped make the club what it is today. Thank you to both of them for their great service for this great club.

That's not a nice thing to say.

          The club is a shambles.

I remember seeing Mr. Steel and Ron Jones around the club as a kid. Both of them were gentlemen and loved the Roosters.

I met Larpa at the SFS a few years back. He was an absolute gentleman.

That's two Aboriginal legends the club has lost this year.

If there is a football Heaven, I won't be too shy to talk to Artie when I get there like I was when he walked past
                    me at the SFS gates.
Must find out how to book my Season Ticket to the games up there......I'll keep you a seat Stephen.

At least the crowds will be better.

Do you actually attend the games yourself Ray? Or do you just deathride them from your armchair?

It must be a real disappointment to you that we are 4 from 6 and are capable of 'winning ugly' with (in your opinion) our useless coach and talentless team.

Always good to honour the memory of those who dug the well that we drink from today.

Without administrators of the calibre of Keith Steel, the Leagues club and Football club could well have folded.

Players like Bruce Stewart helped the club pick itself up off the floor and struggle on.
