Fair point. Anybody can say 'I hear he hasn't locked in his extension for 2024' for the purpose of speculating about what options he could theoretically choose instead.

Such journalism is no better than fiction, however. I'm no NRL player but there's a few journalist who cover my line of work. Hearing them speak as 'experts' on the idiot box makes me cringe as they know enough to talk about stuff for hours, but make up a lot of shyte along the way.

Why would he leave. Oldest most successful club. Best coach great culture and new facilities. The best chance of a gf is 2023

I'm feeling the same way, all this player option to play another year, how can a club plan their roster around that ?
Bunnies were correct in not being held to this nonsense.
All this softly, softly pampering, I'm over it, in fact, we should state what's on offer, take it or bugger off.

We generally never pay overs but I wouldn't mind if they pay a little over to keep JS. I think on the back of JS and young Sammy we can build our team for the next 10 years. Who have we ever had that has shown this much at that age ?? Keary is close to the end and JWH even closer. Toops who does so much of the thankless carries and is a calming influence is getting on also. We have some huge changes coming to our club, why not build it around Sammy and JS

Keary hasn't even cracked 200 first grade games, retirement talk is very premature. Not to mention he has a contract until 2024.

I'm a little torn on Suaali, I think he has some real leadership ability and I like what he's made of. He plays it tough and is a real team first player, you can't underestimate guys like that when you're building strong culture in a team. So I really want to see him stay.

But I think hes still very raw as a fullback and a long way off being first grade standard in that position. So at this stage to offer him anything more than 600k-700k as a gun winger/potential centre would be massive overs IMO.

I agree but a gun winger should be $500k max. I don’t reckon Toops ever would have been paid this much and he’s on the verge of becoming our all time leading try scorer. Only if he moves to centre could you justify giving him more than $500k.

With JWH retiring at the end of this year, a portion of his contract money can be used to upgrade Suallii. A good prop replacement wouldn’t cost more than 500k. Also the cap has increased significantly and I feel we will have the $$$ to keep JS if he wants to stay and plays wing/centre .
As many have said , he looks to be a mature young man and he will hopefully see the long term benefits of being in a club that will look after its long serving players after footy. Look at Ricketson, Minichello, Fittler, Friend, Cordner, Aubusson etc etc even BMoz who was only here for 2 years is assistant coach.

I have never heard Suaalii mention Roosters beyond 2023. IMO he will go and earn his millions in Union, and then come back after Teddy retires.

For someone so young, inexperienced but highly talented with much improvement going forward it shouldn't be about $$$.

Look at the fine examples before him that chased money in other codes > Folau, Lote, Sailor, Rogers, RTS, Benji Marshall and never soared to greater heights. Yes they may have represented their country but their careers plateaued IMO and most returned to the code that they excelled in.

I am all good with this, earn his millions and then come back as a more worldly player.

After we win the compl this year that it..

I don't begrudge any player wanting to financially secure their future.

Suaalii is in a different situation to those names mentioned. With the exception of Benji, none of those players had the capacity to earn anywhere near what Suaalii can earn as a 20yo. And most of them had to remain away from league to continue earning decent money. Suaalii will be capable of earning decent money as an NRL fullback in a few years' time.

probably the main difference to young Joey and the others you have mentioned is that they all left to union when they were 25 or older I think, Joey could leave and come back for 4-5 years and still only be 24.
