  • Oh, to have the "discipline" of South Sydney

Hasler's gone berserk in today's paper about the 2-7 penalty count that went against his team. He should have looked at the stats! He was up against the most "disciplined" team of the last decade.

Despite being the joke of the league for much of this time, with a rabble of clapped out, overpaid hacks under-performing on the field, their "discipline", it would seem, is exemplary. In only one year - 2006 - did they give away more penalties than they received.

As a point of comparison, let's look at a notoriously "undisciplined" team in the same period - say, the Sydney Roosters. The penalty differentials for the two teams since 2004 are:

    Souths: +34 +10 -22 +20 +28 +23 +16 +13 +17... Total: +139
    Roosters: +28 -5 -19 0 -37 -50 -46 -17 -8.... Total: -154

The penalty differential between the two sides is therefore 293. Our annual handicap compared to the Rabbitohs is 32.

The way Rugby League works nowadays is that the majority of tries come on the back of penalties. Souths certainly would not have beaten the Tigers or the Dogs without this assistance.

We must do something to address this culture of penalty-giving at the Roosters. It is an entrenched problem that seems to be woven into the fabric of our jerseys.

I am very impressed by the insight of many Chookpen members. What advice would you give to our coaching staff to overcome this handicap?

(For the record, I think the Rabbitohs are in with a big chance this year, particularly if the penalties continue to flow in the way they seemingly always have. They're on track to have the biggest positive penalty differential for a season since records were first kept.)

How do $$ouff$$ compare to other teams other than Easts, I have a feeling Easts are the most penalised team in the comp, but does anyone know the stats? Wouldn't be surprised if the Vermin are the least penalised, they would be interesting stats to see how Melbourne & the Broncs stack up too.

I was at the game yesterday with a mate who's a Dogs fan. You can't definitively say that Souths would have won or lost the game without the assistance they received from the ref but there were some turning points off the back of crucial ref calls. The high tackle penalty on Reynolds was disgraceful. That happens 10 times a game in cover defence and goes unpenalised. Shame on Reynolds for being such a cat imo. James Graham got hit far worse twice and only the one where he stayed down got penalised. Isn't that a bit sad.

That Reynolds penalty led to a try. Souths first two tries were very flukey and the King try was a fair dinkum knock on. Watching it live right in front of the incident it was obvious that he'd touched it. Even when the winger touched down King knew he'd touched it and showed no joy.

But despite these and other bad calls Souths speed off the line in defence in the second half gave the Dogs no chance of a comeback. They looked impenetrable. Totally different to the defensive rabble that they were in the first half. The reason they could move off the line so quick was because they were controlling the standing wrestle brilliantly (thanks to macguire). Until we realised this is what everything stems from we'll continue to be penalties more than other teams.

We haven't realised it in 10 years. And Souths (which in 2012 look like a well drilled outfit) have been a heap of dog poo for most of the last 10 years... but still have a marvelous penalty record in that period.

But I'm comforted that it can all be attributed to wrestling technique. It makes me think of that other credible, incorruptible sporting competition - World Championship Wrestling in the 60s and 70s.

Over the last decade, Easts have been the most penalised team since 1980 (I don't have figures before that... but I have a memory and can recall our treatment at the hands of Keith Page). Here are some other teams' figures over the last 5 years.

          2011 2010 2009 2008 2007
          Brisbane +37 +16 +2 +17 -4
          Cronulla +33 +23 +22 +40 +23
          Tigers +31 +17 -15 -2 +33
          Parramatta +21 +11 +19 +47 +40
          Melbourne -29 +11 +9 -33 +4
          Roosters -17 -46 -50 -37 0

I don't know. The figures in my last post are for the whole season - a plus figure means that the team has received more penalties over the whole year than it has given away; a negative means the opposite.

7-2 in Souths favour unfair? What, then, of West Tigers getting 6-1 over Brisbane?

As to the tackle on Reylnolds: it was high and demanded a penalty as did Asotasi's later.

We have to get over the 'poor us' syndrome. Remember West Tigers have a big gripe over THAT penalty in the final a couple of years ago.

What penalty would that be? The one that should have gone to the Roosters in front of the posts when JWH was shouldered in the head?

There are hundreds of dud decisions every week. There are plenty of lop-sided penalty counts too. I am talking about teams that have consistently benefited (or suffered) in the penalty stakes for years.

Spirit, there is nothing you can say or present to some on this forum to convince them we do not deserve the whippings we receive from the match officials, so stop being so objective and just accept their right to enjoy being scourged.

By the way here are some exclusive pictures of some of them enjoying their strange pastime. If you look closely you can identify Tony Archer, Ben Cummins and Jared Maxwell driving some of the nails into the bodies of some of these chook penners who disagree with you, and you can see them loving every minute of it. Steve Clark is in the crucifixion video review box in some of them..

Jesus, too, lacked discipline. Is David Gallop the new Pontius Pilot? Did he not sayeth of Tony Archer, after the 2010 GF:

"Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people; and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him."
