Tim Costello's statistics on the extent of gambling in Australia are horrifying. The least able to sustain loss are the most vulnerable and the industry appeals to that group's sense of belonging, what Aussies do - John Singleton's "a beer, a bet and a smoke" stuff and there's "Aussies will. bet on a fly crawling up a wall". Another one for the poor insecure suckers is "Bet with a mate" and the veneration of the Melbourne Cup. All imply that not to bet is being "un -Australian" just as not drinking alcohol is.

Where do these facile adages come from? I mean the sheer folly of thinking that you can beat the formidable odds involved should be evident. I learned from bitter experience from a father's gambling addiction reinforced by a short period in which I lost my wages three weeks running. On the last occasion, leaving Rose Hill on the losers' train, my mate pointed out two flashy Pontiac Parisiennes leaving the parking area - "That's the Waterhouses" he enthused, full of admiration. Said it all to me at the time.

The dollars and cents symbols on this confuse me a bit - is it 10c in every dollar or one tenth of a cent from every dollar?

Same... I find it hard to get into when I know that the house always wins.

Fark it's evil how there's so much betting associated with sports. It's just such a lazy revenue stream because people get addicted and end up handing over a crap load of cash that they're gonna regret wasting.
