  • The big picture for 2012.....

    ....What do you reckon ?
I reckon that we will trouble a lot of sides .I never buy into the bullcrap that they are a young side there is more than a nucleus of players there who were part of 2010 to carry them.
The X factor player is really SKD weather you like it or not when he is on plenty happens he usually guarantess us 2-3 tries a match.
The book ends Marty Kennedy and JWH- both will be dominant forwards in the years to come .Although JWH gets all the wraps Marty is miles better and is slowly getting his fitness back and MOM tomorow night wouldnt surprise me.
The Halves ..Anasta for some reason can never fire all season long its like he is extremely average for long periods and then picks about half a dozen games and usually delivers - he needs to pick it up a bit -stop trying to be the hero and get the boys moving. Which brings me to Pearce .I am certain that he hasnt been in any bad form this year I have seen him in the mix but its pretty hard when your forwards cant make a dent in the opposition and last week they did and he was able to play the game he wanted.
Which bring now my concern in attack.
Right hand side is dynamite and the left side is shit.I want to see Pearce float both ways he can help them I think under Smith by keeping him on the right all the time has hurt his career -Smith needs to wake up and let Pearce play a dominant role on both sides.
If they can iron out the problems on the left in the next few weeks then we should win a few games.
We havnt got much in replacements for Hulk and BJ ...I still think Hulk is smoking time bomb ...some bloke after two major injuries can take 2 years to get their Mojo back- he lacks a bit of confidence and tends concede the tackle .He needs to Change that ASAP. BJ is talented but is in poor form but that has a lot to do with the shithouse left side service.
If Smith wants the left sid eto function then tomorrow night game is the best chance.
The hookers are a bit of a problem too Valium is out of form and the other is quicker but needs more run in him -if the hookers go forward the whole team does and you develop depth in the attack.
Then there is our beloved Mini who also has been putting in but cramping them by trying to do too much the wrong way.Last week against teh warriors it was smart play instead of jogging or running into the defence he was running towards half gaps at full speed , wasnt over playing his hand and chimed in perfectly this all he has to do week in week out.
The boys that need a bit more confidence and attitude building are probably BJ, Cordner ,Hulk and Lama Tasi and I have no doubt blokes Like Tasi and Tangkarangi have the goods but need more game time .
Tomorrows game against the Titans should be a win they are basket case .Our attitude out there is too bury them for the season. If not than smithy would be at fault here.

Face it our form apart from last week has been shiitty but we are 3 from 5 and have a lot of improvement in us yet and the forwards will get much more damaging in the coming weeks so we are not travelling too bad just looks worse.
We can finish in the top 4 if the players really want it.

Good summation mate. You're gunna get slaughtered. lol

You are correct about Pearce, his right to left passing is much faster and more accurate than his left to right. It's crucial Smith gives him more lattitude. Fark Anasta off. Even if the players want top 4, he's an anchor that'll keep us 6-8 at best.

The middle is looking strong. FPN, JWH, D9, they are starting to dominate and we should expect more from Tasi and Cordner when he gets more game time. Taka is the key to the left hand side imo. Taka can and should be the go to man down the that side with BJ, the dynamic dwarf and god forbid Moga running off him. Leave Maubs, SKD and Sam down to the right and buy and attacking fullback.

    Chook.

Actually Chook its his passing from right to left that is weak he turns to turn his body and let his strong arm pass it ,this is a big problem for him because when the oppsition see his body they know he is going for a cut out long play and they read it all the time this is the only thing he needs to fix and of course I am critical of his support play he doesnt do enough in following the bal lcarrier around he would be our quickest bloke you just havnt seen it yet.

They want controversy - the the left side of Brain says sack em all and hire SBW as one man 3 million dollar man team.

Yianni.. I dont totally believe that. He is behind the eight ball in fitness and it shows.

Agree Brain. You put it well. Morts needs to get back up to speed. Mitchell showed him up big time on the weekend.

I'm just looking for a bit of consistency from the young guys as the season progresses. I like that we're winning but not playing great footy, it tells me that if we can get our shit together we are a chance for the 8. I don't think we have the quality for top 4, but if we make the 8, I will be more than happy. With the halves, I agree I don't like restricting a player to left or right. In teams I coach, we play left and right, but the right sided half becomes first receiver when we are spreading to the left and vice versa, it at least gets them involved in the play.

Anyone who thinks Anasta at 5/8th can take us to the grand final has Souvlaki in their head.

The way we're performed so far in 4 of our 5 games, we'd struggle to make the GF of Jersey Flegg!

Correct. Did we or did we not get flogged by 40 points by Melbourne (a good team can overcome getting anally raped by the referees) not long after failing to score a point when beaten by Penrith?

I am no more convinced of this club's chances to even make the semis than I am that Brian Smith is a competent coach.

I am far from convinced Smith can take us to the finals. But has he not done the job he was here to do. I dont mind seeinga committed TEAM being beat, than a bunch of high priced individulas.

See you dont get it Little John. You bag alot yet come up with fark all solutions. You say piss off smith yet come up with no alternatives. What hasler? bellamy? All contracted. This team is lacking in ability to break the line, yet you dimiss the best ball player going around.

I wont bag Smith, because he got rid of the fleas.

Now what have you got, another picture.

As is often the case we're not bad, but not good either. We have enough $$$ to sign SBW (close to 1/4 of the cap free?) and we're still winning games.

Still losing games too, but hey... so is Newcastle! Last time I checked we were ahead of Wayne's dream team on the table, with far less superstars on our roster (a total of none... great!)

We are an okay defensive team who lacks discipline. In attack we have a habit of over playing our hand, and TBH have no freaks who can score from anywhere on the park. SKD is maybe our closest to that?

                            ---

                            IMO Smith's right in basically:
                            1) Setting up some solid ranks in defence reasonably cheaply.
                            2) Dumping the fat (this is taking a LONG time, but you can't just terminate contracts of guys like Myles, Carney and Anasta without a backlash.)
                            3) Shopping around for some super start who can give us the attacking potency we need.
                            4) Avoiding the spoon/complete shame, which is what the club had when Smith was passed the baton... no coach, no plan, no stars and a wooden spoon. We're now a team that has some respect at least.

My replacement's already picked for Smith. Daniel Anderson.

I've said that from the get go. Bellamy is a myth, backed up by the NRL and a shit load of lucky breaks, dud calls against the opposition and having a creative hooker, decent halves and a fast fullback.

Give us that and we'd win more comps than Melbourne has. Which is technically just one.
