  • Round Zero Manly V Roosters

Apparently in the works for 2023 in California, Manlys home game & will count for points but just means both teams have the bye in rd1. Thoughts ?

Terrible idea. We’re starting the season coming off a World Cup with a 12 hour flight each way, plus adjustment for jet lag? Additionally there’ll still be an odd number of teams so three teams will have a bye round 1

Redcliffe have applied to play us in round 1 as a tribute to Artie.
This seems like a much better idea.

Not sure why they are persisting with this - the ship has well and truly sailed - Better off playing in Canada as they did bid to host this current RLWC and the next one in 2025 but lost out to England and France.

Canada have their own NFL comp (CFL) but no NFL team and only one MLB team (Toronto Blue Jays) after the Montreal Expos were moved to Washington ( Washington Nationals)

Rugby League is on the rise in Canada and the Canadian Women's team(Ravens) also qualified for the current Women's RLWC.

Rugby League administrators need to develop and invest in areas where their is a genuine appetite for the Game and population and where the game has a better chance of succeeding such as in Canada.

Certainly missed an opportunity in expanding the game internationally by not awarding the hosting rights to Canada for one of these RLWC

They seem to be way too focused on the pacific islands but the populations are not there to sustain it going forward especially when Rugby is the more favoured code

        Canada population - 37 million / Tonga 109,000 / Samoa 202,000 / Fiji 912.000

Probably because we almost always lose round 1. We've lost 7 out of our last 10 round 1 games.

Not good preparation for the long season. Why promote league in the US? It will never take off there. Even Souths were clever enough to pull out of this trip.

Maybe the Manly game can be played in San Francisco

The Castro district in San Fran has a great sporting oval

I remember we took a trial game to Japan against Manly. Think it was 1996 pre season.
