QUEENSLAND'S experiment with a "Dads Army" State of Origin side in 2001 finished in victory, now Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello believes NSW should take a closer look at a similarly experienced Blues team for the 2012 series.
31-year-old Minnichiello, who played the final two matches of the 2011 State of Origin series at fullback, believes the Blues would be well served including more experienced players such as Newcastle No. 9 Danny Buderus.
Buderus' possible selection for NSW has already been pushed by Knights coach Wayne Bennett - and Minichiello believes the experienced hooker would not let the team down if selected.
Minichiello said the 34-year-old Buderus can still make the Blues team, despite Bulldogs hooker Michael Ennis being in pole position as the incumbent NSW hooker.
"It's great to see him playing really good football," Minichiello said.
"Mick Ennis is the incumbent Blues hooker but it's obvious all positions are up for grabs and if he was picked then I think he'd do a great job."
He also said pairing experienced players with young talent is important because it creates a good team environment.
"It's important to have experienced players in the game just to guide (younger players)," Minichiello said.
"It's important to have a mix of both because it creates, obviously, a good culture."
In 2001, Queensland selected 35-year-old Alan Langer, Andrew Gee (32), Darren Smith (32) and Kevin Campion (30) in their side which was labelled "Dad's Army", which won 2-1.
Minichiello said he has not discussed the 2012 State of Origin Series with Blues coach Ricky Stuart and is happy to leave selection issues up to the coach and panel of selectors.
