  • Player Loaning System, another NRL Farce?

A Cut and paste off one of my FB groups...

"I absolutely despise this ridiculous loaning of players to clubs. David Nofoaluma is contracted to the Tigers who foolishly will
loan him to the Storm who unfortunately have injuries. What do they get back in return to help them avoid the wooden spoon ? SFA !
Melbourne have players out, so what. Where is their depth ?
What about this next man mentality ?
The past few days have highlighted what a farce of an organization the NRL have become".

Totally agree...where is the fairness in all of this....the weak clubs gotta feed the strong? So we can have 50 to 60 point thrashings for the final regular season rds..
This may seal any slight top 4 spot for us as the storm were falling...

    Thoughts?

Maybe...but how is this gonna help the tigpies avoid the spoon this yr?

Could have been even worse as Adam Doueihi and Daine Laurie were apparently knocked back,
as were the dogs Josh Addo-Carr and the Warriors for Reece Walsh.

It also breeds hypocrisy, the dogs accepted two players last yr yet won't release one.

it won't but it will mean that they can spend the money that was set aside for nofa on someone else to the benefit of next year

So u saying the tigpies salary cap next yr (which is 9.4m for all clubs) goes to say 9.5m (assuming they pay 100G for him)?

I can see no evidence for this....perhaps u can link me something?

I thought the loaning system was only around in response to the covid threat.
Keeping it going to help clubs like Melbourne through an injury crisis is ridiculous.

Clubs I understand can't carryover unspent cap money to the next season or subsequent seasons- The Storm will just reimburse the Tigers for Nofoaluma's salary during the loan period.

Depending on what the value of the remainder of Nofoaluma's contract is they could possibly sign a player and or promote a player to the NRL squad for the rest of the season.

Nothing wrong with a loan or trade system as they have this in other major sports - Football/Baseball/NFL for an example- Not sure what the fuss is about.

It's a Win Win Win Win for all Parties as the Storm get an experienced/quality winger / Tigers get back an experienced and better player with insights into how the Storm prepare for games/ Nofoaluma get's to play Finals Footy.

Nofoaluma would think Christmas has come early

mate, i'm not an expert on how the salary cap works but i believe you can transfer a % of the salary cap each year to the next. alternatively, they could give someone more this year in place of giving him more next year. i'm pretty sure the tigers will benefit from offloading nofa

Clubs have to spend 95% of their cap each season and i don't believe there is any carryover system for unspent cap.

not sure about it ks, but i thought you could transfer some amount - perhaps that 5% - to the next year

According to an article about the Dolphins luring Munster there, 5% of the cap can be used in the subsequent year. Apparently, this was how they could afford to offer him a $5M contract.
