  • Lodge facing a fine - what a joke

Roosters prop Matthew Lodge will escape with a fine for the high tackle which ended Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga's game on Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Ponga failed his HIA and didn't return following the incident in the eighth minute, which saw Lodge put on report and later charged with a Grade 1 Careless High Tackle. Lodge faces a $1,800 fine with a guilty plea or a $2,500 fine if found guilty.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Pretty standard decision in this nanny state day and age

        NO!
        NO!

        DO NOT APPEAL!

Pay the fine and buy a lottery ticket.
        .
I'm watching the taped replay now.
Not a high tackle...but...there's one frame that could be argued made
        contact with the high neck.

        A fine is fair punishment.

If he loses it is just a higher fine.
if we accept it is on his record

Fair enough a fine only - player welfare is paramount in such decisions.

If that was Keary would people be arguing that the offending player shouldn't be fined - I strongly doubt it. They would be advocating for the offending player to be suspended.

If ponga didn't have all those prior Hia incidents, lodges light contact w his neck would have been only an on field penalty. An over reaction by the mrc.

Fine for the outcome, not the act.

Standard reactionary punishments from the NRL.

This is a case of where "thank you very much" ( for just a fine) is very wise.

like Rooster _6 said...the MRC wait for a doctors report before making a decision , and what if pongia didnt get a concussion (which was a result of his head hitting the turf) does Lodgey get off?.

Lodge obviously got Ponga flush on the cheekbone thats why he failed his HIA.
Ponga is at the Luke Keary level when it comes to concussions, it wasnt hard contact yet he failed his HIA because of concussion.

No , not flush but a glancing brushofhis cheekbone. The brush caused him to contact the ground where the "concussion" occurred. Again without the priors, concussion would almost certainly not occurred. But you are correct w the Keary analogy..

Happy with a fine, I was actually expecting a 2-3 week suspension.
