  • Need to start planning for a long term Keary replacement due to concussion concerns

You get the feeling with Kearny that any concussion moving forwards will be treated with extra caution and additional time on the sideline ( as it should)
With this is mind I believe we need to starting planning for the future now.
We either go for a structured half and play Walker at 5/8th or develop Walker as a 7 and buy a Matt Burton etc

I mentioned this a while back and got laughed at. Some people think what happened 2 years ago won't affect any decision about his future when he has another head knock. One more decent one and he's finished.

Manu & LilJoJo can go to FB when Teddy retires. Hutch as a low-cost, big boot, big body option. He is probably still faster than Hastings.

Keary was always on the edge of another bad knock, his ACL injury probably did him a world of good in that department.

wonder if Manu is a long term option with JS taking the fullback spot.

Yeah I disagree with that....he is no more in danger than anyone else. Was just an unlucky stray friendly knee today.

Think we need to calm down and stop buying into the media beat up. It’s been considerable time since his last knock, he’ll go through protocols and take it from there

Manu is a talented player and can play 5/8. But that is not his optimal position, and I think it weakens the overall balance.

What people must realise is there are not many quality 5/8s going around these days AT ALL, and with the Dolphins coming in, even less talent to go around.

Burton is the only very good / outstanding 5/8 we've got a hope of purchasing IMO.
Failing that, Hutchison is the best option we have in-house to fill the gap. not flash, but very underrated. Better choice the Lam, Watson or Keighran. Complements Walker well, and has the massive boot.

Should Keary ever have to retire anytime soon (hopefully not, as he is among the 3 best 5/8s in the comp, and I really rate him to get back to his best), i'd like to see a backline of the following ongoing...

                1. Tedesco
                2. Toops
                3. Sualli
                4. Manu
                5. (new signing/prospect)
                6. Burton / Hutchison
                7. Walker

Look at how Cronulla are treating Dale Finucane. They say it’s a knee injury, which relieves the pressure to return from a consecutive head knock. They are doing similar with Wade Graham. They learnt from what they saw Boyd Cordner endure and the media focus on his return.

I sincerely doubt that Burton will be signed. We have Manu who in his first two plays as a 5/8 set up a try and almost created another one. If keary retires he’s the long term plan. Our key recruitment needs to come in the form of two centres (if manu moves to 5/8), and strong forward bench depth I don’t have any faith in any of our backup props for next year, apart from tuku (provided he comes good)

He had two plays at 5/8 today, created one try and almost another. He also was motm last year at Canberra as a 5/8. Moreover, we don’t give him fullback or 5/8 he leaves in 2024 for one last big payday.

I will be crucified for saying this but I think Hutch is a better option Han Keary ATM.
Watson should not be in our team, never liked the signing, just could not work out how he would fit in.
We desperately need a hooker with crisp delivery.

Can Manu kick the ball long or short ?? Because we all know Walker can’t kick long and Brandon Smith isn’t known for his kicking skills..
