  • Panthers game

I was busy on Saturday and couldnt watch the game, just watched the replay.

I was shocked by the number of penalties that Penrith got away with. This isn't the reason we lost, but it sure makes it hard to beat the best team in the comp when the refs also on their side.

After we made breaks we were held down in the tackle way too long, no penalties blown, Penrith actually scored next play on one occasion. Penrith forward passes, tackling Toops in the air on a scoring opportunity.

    Is it just me?

Also, we seem to be short on strike and there were big parts of the game where we didnt really throw anything at them?

Nah, you're right. Especially with the forward passes. They had numerous ones which could've been pulled up, and several drops that could've been called knock-ons, too.

Agree not necessarily the reason we lost, but hard to argue they didn't get most of the 50-50's.

A lot of any teams trys are from set restarts. It’s the shittiest rule in the game. It’s only there to give the game managers more control in influencing the momentum of a game.

It's there to stop clubs lying all over the ruck and avoid having to defend without a desired structure.

Problem is we just didn't seem to get many out of Gerard Sutton on Saturday.

Perfect example was when Tedesco went within a metre of the goal line, Penrith definitely held down longer than they should of because they knew they needed to reset their line and were willing to give away a 6 again in order to do so but the penalty never came.

We deserved that 6 again so we could continue to pull their defence out of shape instead of a penalty where the opposition captain can come and talk to the ref, we kick backwards 9m, ball boys passes to the winger, winger passes in field and then dummy half taps the ball on to a prop and the defence has had a good 20-30second breather.

My observation is the refs are being taken for a ride. The Panthers are very good at "keeping momentum" in a tackle, wrestle and dance a little left/forward/back/right, fully in control of the tackle and just wasting time. When ref calls held all pile in and pretend to be tangled Cam Smith style. They do it better than anyone else.

I would like to see ref call held sooner and count to three. If the player is not allowed to play the ball at three, or driven backwards, or thrown to the ground then six-again. Take away any advantage of the wrestle.

Robbo could have swung the Billy and made a cuppa by the time the panthers got off Teddy it was a terrible non call from Sutton.

My pet hate is a defender has to release in a millisecond on a low one on one tackle yet 3 blokes in a wrestle are called held and then allowed to continue to drive the attacker into the ground.
It's poor refereeing that has crept into the game since the advent of wrestling.

They need to go back to the dominant tackle interpretation of early 2000s. If you drive a player backwards you get rewarded with a slower play the ball. But if there is no momentum and they are just wrestling for the sake of wasting time them don't reward them by letting drive the player after the call of held.

There are few rules that have been altered from their original intent:
                  - the strip rule no longer about ball carrier making a clean tackle bust and then subsequently stripped by next tackler. This is my pet hate.
                  - you can now effectively carry a player into touch as long as you hold them low enough for the feet to drag across the ground

And the Panthers scored on that very play. Huge turning point IMO

Panthers have mastered the pulling the leg off the ground and dragging the held player , it's only a matter of time before someone has a groin injury from it.

Agree, this is the example i was referring to. It was the last tackle, another set was deserved, ref just didnt have the balls to blow a penalty on the 5th, Penrith score from our kick.

The Panthers are also masters of handling the opposition defense during tackles and driving their own player forward by using the tacklers. I thought that was illegal or is it only illegal in the act of scoring a try?

Agree. Another one is the strip (a rule i hate). For some reason when a player attemps a strip the ref gives the defender an extra 5 seconds to slow the play.

The Panthers, much like the Storm have learnt the art of being offside/wrestling/holding down and getting away with it

The better teams always skirt the rules like this, nothing new

Unfortunately we lack players with footy IQs
