  • Possible navicular bone stress fracture for Egan Butcher

Could be a while before we see Egan Butcher.

Also concerning the run of serious foot injuries this team has had over the last year Keary, Suaalii, Smith and now Butcher.

A Navicular Stress Fracture is an injury to the navicular, one of the tarsal bones of the midfoot.

This type of injury is common in athletes, particularly those who participate in high-impact sports that require jumping, sprinting and sudden directional changes. Track and field athletes are particularly susceptible.

Using a stress fracture foot treatment boot can reduce stress on the foot and ankle and lower the chance of additional injury setting back one's recovery. A period of rest and orthotic usage can give the weight bearing bones and their supporting tissues a chance to heal.

It will take about 6 weeks for most people to heal. The goals of treatment are to manage pain and support the bone as it heals. This may include: Medicine to ease pain and swelling.

Very unfortunate but at least it is early in the season. We've got plenty of good options to fill in for Egan temporarily !

                Faaaar...

A friend (national grade 400m and 800m runner who got a US college scholarship) did one of those during a race and it's the most pain I've ever seen somebody in (he still beat me in that race BTW). We hear about ACLs, achilles and syndesmosis all the time in the NRL but as a sprinter, a navicular is an absolute nightmare.

Sounds very nasty Doc. We’ve been getting a few foot injuries of late.

Not good. These types of injuries can be extremely difficult. Not sure about any league players but Geelong AFL team All Australian defender Matt Egan never played again and James the jabber Hird also had a lot of problems. They don’t heal quickly.

Reports today that Egan will miss at least the first 4 rounds with this foot stress fracture.
