He's a tough listen if you are a grammar or pronunciation zealot! My girlfriend would be horrified god love him! I like listening to him though. Comes across as a descent man...
The guy has done it all really. Most kids would be happy to just play first grade....
he has done everything in the game and then some.....3 comps, captain of club, state and country, origin series wins as captain and many others! He'd struggle to find anything to regret about his career that's for sure! Many greats have not accomplished anywhere near what he has!

Kudos to Peter O'Sullivan for grooming him to the Roosters. At the time I remember Newcastle being very annoyed about us "poaching" young Cords.

Etched in the memory bank (circa 2009 NYC Holden Cup) is the sight of a very teary Cords walking up the old Aussie Stadium tunnel nursing a broken jaw courtesy of Knights front rower Josh Ailoamai - just 2 weeks out from the announcement of the Aust Schoolboys squad which included team mates Cheyse Blair & Jacob Miller. Ironically Josh and Cords would become team mates a few years later.

POS was going off his chops at the officials for not sending Ailoamai off before Brian Smith, who was coaching Knights 1st grade at the time had a quiet word in his ear and calmed him down. They probably knew at the time that Freddy's time was coming to an end and Smith was being groomed for 2010. POS came through the Dragons playing & coaching ranks during Smith's days there.

Have a listen and see. IMO it was really well researched... Bloke had his notes out the whole time and went through Cords' entire career in massive depth.

A few things I gained were:
- The context of his debut (others probably knew... I didn't realise)

- When he reckons he was in top form (again a surprise but it's all backed up... interesting because it's a seemingly random, in-between sorta season).

- Insights into his rivalries and struggles with injuries. Lotsa deep stuff there IMO.

- He went into who the best dude to play with is and why. Lotsa depth and insight there that's relevant to today's team.

- We got a breakdown of every grand final (and the seasons in between where we failed... what happened there). Stuff we 'know' I guess, but we get a glimpse of what it was all like through Cords' eyes.

- There's some Pearce, Nikorima and Hastings stuff in there. He doesn't thrown anybody under a bus but I feel he touches a few subjects that we as a club prefer not to talk about.

- Lotsa humbling moments where Cords comes clean an says he thought his reputation/career were done for. He''s not a bloke who says much so this was fascinating! Just all that to-and-fro of getting selected and stuff that as an Australian & NSW captain I always assumed was never really an issue for him. Kemp provided some useful insight there too... it was good to have a fringe player (who had some good seasons with Brisbane) speaking heart to heart with an Australian captain.

- Could go on but lotsa personal reflections on everything from him supporting the Sharks as a kid to what he's doing today. It was all VERY well researched and in classic Kemp style, he showed full respect for his subject (and his achievements). Like his interview with Cam Smith (which gave me a lot more respect for the guy - who I hate haha) he was able to put any personal grudges aside and just celebrate the man's achievements. With all the negative shyte and shyte throwing going on all over the internet during COVID, this was REALLY refreshing. Just two blokes reflecting positively on the last ~15 years of footy, covering just about EVERY event within that time. It was all class IMO.

PS - I'm not paid by Bloke in a Bar but if Kempey wants to send me a case, I'm happy to drink it. Noting, it's an okay price! My local supermarket (a Canberra 'Supabarn' that's pretty new/clean) does a case for $50 outta the cool room. Those hipster beers are like $82 or so for a case and TBH I'm over drinking mouthfuls of hops... I get the whole IPA story and stuff but gimme a lager or pilsner any day!)

He probably went in to more detail regarding his retirement decision and what he went through in making up his mind in this one, I didn't think he said a whole lot about Hastings/Nikorima other than that we were a young team back then, there was certainly no flashing insight into what went wrong that season.

I can take or leave Kemp as an interviewer. You say it was well researched, yet he doesn't know how many GF's Boyd played in? Or that the Roosters played in 3 in a row from 02-04. I find this with a lot of his interviews, it's like he has the wikipedia page open and goes from year to year with the subject. Perfect example was the SKD interview when talking about the 2013 GF and he didn't even know that Skids scored the go-ahead try. That's basic stuff that a good researcher would have picked up, geez...all he had to do was watch the highlights before the interview! And I'm not really interested in who anybody's favourite rapper is, mine is probably a mars bar rapper!

Fair enough... we all see things differently. Good on you if you already knew everything. I didn't and thoroughly enjoyed the full 2 hours.

Personally hate rap (and cricket, gridiron...etc) but then again nobody's interviewing me about my interests are they? (E.g. my favourite Dreamcast game, which arcade machines I've got in my garage, my law firm's soccer team, favourite jazz musician, favourite Japanese kamisori...etc). Those little questions give some insight into the people we're listening to and can go anywhere so they don't bother me. There's a reason why people wanna listen to Cords/Kemp and not me (despite the fact I'm more articulate and have more sophisticated tastes).

I suppose Denan is just there to sell beer but if he was a half decent journalist not just a fan boy, he seize upon the gems that the subject raises.

Like when Boyd offered that we have a couple of new players ‘that have just come on’ this year, at centre and back row, and he didn’t ask who? Instead he guessed and asked about Renouf Atoni. He missed the opportunity. Maybe as a result of drinking on the job?
