  • Ridiculous-Walsh edges out Walker to claim RLPA’s Rookie of the Year honour

Ridiculous!!! How many times has Walker won games when they were on the balance? How many times did Walsh get the Warriors out of a jam?

Walsh is good and will be good, but my opinion is that Walker has been better this year...

    What do you think?

‘Shocked’ Walsh edges out Walker to claim RLPA’s Rookie of the Year honour

Warriors young gun Reece Walsh has edged out Roosters star Sam Walker to claim the Rugby League Players Association’s Rookie of the Year award.

Walsh and Walker were the two players in the running for the award and it was revealed on Channel 9’s The Sunday Footy Show that the Warriors fullback for the nod.

The 19-year-old had a dramatic rise this season. He started the year at the Broncos struggling to break into their best 17. After getting an early release to join the Warriors, he not only cemented his spot in the 17, but also forced skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck out of the No.1 jersey.

Walsh played made his NRL debut in Round 7 and went on to play 16 games. He also got the call up to Paul Green’s Queensland Maroons side, however an injury robbed him of his State of Origin debut.

The Queensland-bred fullback told The Sunday Footy Show that he’s “still pinching himself” that he achieved his NRL dream this season.

“It’s pretty crazy and still surreal to receive this award,” Walsh said.

“There’s a lot of great rookies to come through this year so I’m pretty humbled to receive it.

“(The NRL experience) was everything and more coming up into first grade. It was early, I didn’t think I was going to get my crack this year. I was lucky enough to get that... I’m still pinching myself.”

The award is voted on by fellow NRL players and Walsh revealed he had voted his “good mate” Walker for the honour.

“I think I voted for one of my good mates, Sammy walks, so it’s pretty special to get this award. I’m pretty shocked to be honest, Sammy’s been playing some outstanding footy.”

Last year’s winner was Harry Grant who impressed while on loan with the Wests Tigers.

It was always a toss of the coin between them.
I think Walsh deserves it as much as Walker tbh. Maybe those limited minutes in the last few games tipped the scale.
One thing for sure the Queensland spine of Ponga, Walsh, Walker and Grant looks great for the next 10 years.

It's voted on by the players though

All contracted NRL players are eligible to vote. Players can only vote once and are restricted to only voting for opposition players from the Contenders List.
Who is eligible for the RLPA Rookie of the Year?

Players who have played less than three (3) NRL matches prior to the start of a new season are eligible for the RLPA Rookie of the Year award. Once a player appears in three (3) or more matches, he becomes ineligible for the RLPA Rookie of the Year in subsequent seasons.

Players enter one (1) vote and are unable to vote for a Club teammate.

Walsh has been better imo, but both have played admirably in their first year

We won 16 regular season games plus one final. The Warriors won 8 games total. That alone should make it nigh on impossible for Walsh to outpoint Walker.

Ridiculous if you go for the Chooks, happy days if you go for the Warriors.
Will be interesting to see where these 2 are at in 3 years.
Who got the RLPA rookie of the year 2 years ago?

                  Thanks King.
Some pretty handy players on that list.

Yeah my thoughts too. I've probably never seen a first year rookie with as much talent as Walsh. Ponga the closest.

Both very exciting players, I personally would’ve picked Walker I think his achievements were just as good and in a much harder position.

But not mad about it, Walsh is a very talented kid.

Presumably he played more games so the numbers were in his favour?

                        There's still a Dally M rookie, right?

Can't pick your own team mates - how many voted though I wonder ?

Walker - 21 games- some a few minutes only though

Walsh - 16 games- was also selected for QLD SOO but ruled out due to Injury so that may have swung it his way with voters from other clubs?

Wouldn’t have helped that Walker was perceived to be dropped at the end of the year either and his form did drop off a bit. There’s always a recency bias when you’re asking anyone to vote on the a competition that’s run for 25 weeks.
