I don't recall the antagonism towards each other in the 80s and 90s to the extent it has become today and I think it's become detrimental to the point that there are always suspensions out of the games because of the Ill feeling.

In the early to mid 2000’s the rivalry was with Canterbury, Brisbane, St George Illawarra and for a few years with Penrith which itself was a manufactured attempt at a rivalry where Penrith fans hated us for Fittler, Gus, Sing etc.

Souths were always irrelevant when I was growing up: they were bottom feeding garbage while we were making the finals every year, we went on a winning streak of about 15 or 17 games against them, they were kicked out for a few years, we'd won a comp and made grand finals while they were collecting wooden spoons. I don't remember the rivalry being a thing until Crowe came in to the picture and released that book of bullshit and it really took off when Fa'alogo dog shot Anasta and then Riley Brown laid out Craig Wing and the rivalry really took off to another level from 2013 until now because that was the first time since 1987 that both teams were a top tier side at the same time.

The whole thing is a marketing gimmick designed to get people in to the stadium and watching on TV with Channel 9 and in particular Gus going on these monologues about the deep hatred and longest rivalry in the game and how much they hate each other; when I was growing the main rivalry everyone spoke about was Canterbury v Parramatta and to a lesser extent Parramatta v Manly and St George v Brisbane.

I also don't think Easts hate Souths anywhere near as much as they hate us and they are obsessed with us.

It wasn't as relevant in the 80 , 90 s because the vermin weren't relevant .
