  • NRL 2021: Roosters land another junior star in Camden Rams product Lachlan Dooner

A personal sales pitch by skipper James Tedesco has helped the Roosters snare another budding star from his old stomping ground at Camden.

The James Tedesco seal of approval has helped the Roosters secure yet another junior star.

Lachlan Dooner is still just 15 but it’s a name to keep an eye on after the Camden junior agreed to join the Tricolours set-up last week.

Dooner, a talented centre, comes from a similar background to Tedesco — both are Macarthur juniors and Dooner attends renowned rugby league nursery St Gregory’s College, Tedesco’s alma mater.

It was these links, and a personal sales pitch from the Test and Origin superstar himself, that helped the Roosters land Dooner ahead of several other clubs.

With Trent Robinson, another Rams and St Greg’s alumni, also boasting strong links to the area the Camden to Coogee pipeline is in rude health.

Rangy, athletic and blessed with excellent ball skills, Dooner can play fullback, centre and in the halves and has the size to potentially switch to the forwards once he physically matures.

The junior set-up for next season is yet to be confirmed but Dooner will likely form part of the club’s Harold Matthews side, which is again expected to be an Under 17s competition.

Dooner played in the centres for Combined Catholic Colleges at the NSW Schoolboy Championships in June, scoring a try and kicking five goals in a thumping 42-8 win over Combined Independent Schools.

He also crossed for a try in the 18-14 victory over Combined High Schools.

Smart judges considered him extremely unlucky to miss selection in the team of the tournament, especially given he was unfamiliar with the position when the tournament began.

The Tricolours have become one of the NRL’s best clubs when it comes to junior development with the likes of Sam Walker, Egan Butcher and Joseph Suaalii all making their mark in 2021.

A Tall centre who kicks goals? Good recruitment. This has been quite the shopping spree lately with the juniors i hope it continues... This is why we will always be successful.

I was just messaging my son about this kid because he's in the same age group and he played with him in the group 6 reps, when I messaged him he said he didn't rate him but i'm not sure if it's a bit of jealously and competitive nature and club pride.
In all honesty I can't remember him being a standout in the local comp but I don't know how he has developed over the past two years where the competitions have been wreaked because of covid but I hope he proves my son wrong

Camden Rams were one of our arch enemies back in the day along with Picton Magies and the other Campbelltown Clubs such as Campbelltown Warriors/ Campbelltown City Kangaroos/ Campbelltown St Johns-Collegians and sometimes Minto Cobras , Appin Dogs and Narellan Jets

In Under 12's we were minor premiers and beat them in both regular season games but lost the major semi final to them- 8 to 5 on a muddy field but beat them in the Grand final 21 to 7- strange as it was 1975 -we East Campbelltown Eagles played in the St George Dragon full Kit and Camden Rams in the Rooster full kit.

I have seen him play against East Campbelltown Eagles under 15's and he looked okay in that age group - good defence and strong runner of the ball and shows a fair turn of speed and goal kicking technique looked okay - will obviously put on the KG's so good luck to him.

I have also noticed a few Vermin folk out this way too looking over potential players as it is a much ignored junior area by Wests Tigers who seem to be more focused on Balmain Juniors and some sort of return to their the old Magpie junior areas around Lidcombe-Ashfield and playing at Pratton Park - Wests Magpie Reggies and RMC sides were playing home matches at Lidcombe Oval and not Campbelltown Sport Ground for Instance.

If the Central Coast arrangement ended Chook should look at coming out this way - Campbelltown - Macarthur as it is ripe for the taking

Teflon Tim Sheens as Wests Tiger head of Football may fix the problem and do what Gould did at Penrith with the Campbelltown-Macarthur Juniors though?

Like with all the young up & comers its hit & miss. Manu = hit, Ryan Williamson = miss, Sitill = hit, Christian Tuipuloto = miss.

absolutely but you have to get them through the door otherwise they all cost a premium

I gave Christian Tuipuloto more than a pass mark in his only game in firsts. Yes Storm terrorized him with bombs but thought he showed enough he would have seen more first grade moving forward
