  • 2022 Squad Analysis

We are flushed with cash. We have to be. By my count, we will be going into season 2022 losing Friend, Cordner, Liu, Brett Morris and Josh Morris. That’s a lot of salary cap space freed up.

Sure, some of that will go to tying up youngsters like the Butcher brothers, and hopefully keeping Joey at the club, but we are definitely looking light on depth and I think we’re missing a key forward, especially with JWH on his last legs.

Here’s what I anticipate our best 17 would be at this stage for next season, as well as depth:

    1. Tedesco
    2. Tupou
    3. Smith
    4. Manu
    5. Suaalii
    6. Keary
    7. Walker
    8. Collins
    9. Verrills
    10. Taukeiaho
    11. Tupouniua
    12. Crichton
    13. Radley

    14. Watson
    15. JWH
    16. N. Butcher
    17. E. Butcher

    18. Abbey
    19.
    20. Keighran
    21.
    22. Ikuvalu
    23. Hutchison
    24. Lam
    25. Baker
    26. Lussick
    27. Fifita
    28.
    29.
    30. Atoni

What this makes clear to me is that we are light on outside backs, edge forwards and possibly a big name middle to replace JWH in the long run. I think Daniel Saifiti would be an excellent marquee prop to sign with all the extra cash.

Even adding to those players you mentioned, we haven't really signed anyone of note since we lost Cronk and Latrell, so hypothetically there should be a bit more money.

I get that some contracts may be back-ended, but even considering that as well as the fact that we have put a bit of it into upgrading current contracts, there must still be a solid chunk left.
I imagine one or two rather large signings for 2022 or at the end of next season.

If you believe Uncle Nick then we don't back-end.

I think Whyte, Hau Tapuha and VK are missing from that list. SST also a question mark.

We also stop paying for Flanagan next year.

I would say Ben Thomas will be in the full time squad. Brad Abbey ?

I hope our fijian flyer Vuate Karawalevu gets a crack. So much hype about him.

With Watson on board you would have to say Lam and Lussick are surplus to requirements. Kierhan is a decent player and kicks goals to win games and a handy backline/hooker fill in. We have Ben Marhske there if hooking stock gets thin and Watson is playing another position.

Yeah he's on-track to get a run next year by all the gossip from the Fijian side. Only key issue that the Roosters need to address is his defence and a proper pre-season training.

While we should have a decent amount of cash left in the cap I don't think it is as much as some are thinking.
A lot of our players would be receiving contract upgrades, and rightly so.

I can see maybe signing 2 big names for 23 but we will have a few players ready to retire too.
I have followed us since the early 70s and had to put up with being a basket case paying stupid money for 1 or 2 decent players and having a team of second graders playing alongside them for so many of those years

Those days are gone, we pay what you are worth or less now, The roosters and storm are probably the best run clubs these days and while we might have a few lean years here and there just scraping into the eight there teams like west who would consider that a success.

For a start there would have been nothing in the cap for 2022 for Jake. He was going to retire.

I doubt there was much at all for the Morris twins because they were probably expected to retire. If anything it would have been hardly anything just in case.

Boyd's money is quickly spent on upgrades.

I think the Tigers will make a move for either SST or E Butcher possibly both.

The Tigers remind me of a mate from school when it came to his love life. His criteria was for a woman was a face and a pulse. As long as she had these he would go for her. It’s a bit like the Tigers.

                              I just don't see this.
I feel like these are quite conservative estimates:
                              Cooper Cronk 800k
                              Latrell Mitchell 500k
                              Boyd Cordner 500k
                              Jake Friend 400k
                              Brett Morris 200k
                              Josh Morris 200k
                              Kyle Flanagan 250k
                              Liu 250k

Surely all that money hasn't gone to upgrades and contracts for Suaalii, Walker, Keighran and Hutch? Unless I'm forgetting a name or two that we've signed.
