I like Ricky Stuart & I like what he brings to Rugby League.
I was 7 & 8 when Easts won the comps in 74 & 75 & it was great especially for my dad & pop but at 7 & 8 the excitement doesnt stay long but take it 27 years in the future to 2002 & watch the Roosters bring it on home with Ricky as the coach in his first season is probably the biggest high that I have experienced following the Chooks. It was so good to watch them win the comp as an adult. Ricky will always be a CHAMPION to me. Robbo has passed him but those 3 years in the GF's following the best team in the game was bliss. Sticky brought spirit to the club then it went then the best ever Roosters coach brought it back like no one before & has instilled it for 8 years. The man Robbo is the best thing that ever happened to the Roosters. Robbo is the Roosters & I love him.

It was a good yarn, worth watching. Not every doco has to hit negative or controversial points, not compulsory especially for a sports story.

I've disliked Ricky as a Raider whether playing or coaching, always seemed to bring out the bad sportsmanship in him. With Dogs and us (obviously), I liked him.

Any Coach who makes 3 GFs in a row is doing plenty right.

How do you think we'll go this weekend?
Answer as if Cleary is playing. They are not at full strength & Pangai Jnr is brand new & its a new centre pairing for them.

Quietly confident mate. Think it might be a cliffhanger but the boys are playing with a bit more purpose and swagger which is good. Confidence is everything and winning breeds it.

It will be the best win of the season so far if the Chooks do it.
Its a 50/50 game for me if they are without Cleary but its 60/40 to them if he plays.

We're about the same vintage Mickie and I echo your sentiments and feelings 100%. The feeling of euphoria in 2002 was unrivalled. I'll always be grateful to Ricky for that.

2003, 2004 and 2010 made me wonder if we were the Collingwood of the NRL.

God bless you Mr Robinson for evening up the ledger.

Great post Mickie. Especially agree with your comments about the 2002 GF and Robbo.

I am going to go against the grain on this thread and say that in the Ricky Stuart years the side under- achieved.
One comp out of three GF appearances is a failure in my eyes, especially with the sides that we had.
Rather, the invincible 74/75 Roosters, and the Robbo 3 GF appearances/ 3 wins, fill me with pride a a Roosters supporter.

It seems he didn't coach any side between us and Canberra.

i think 2 premierships out of the 3 gfs under ricky would have been a fair return and he has to take some responsibility for that but he has to get some credit for getting the team to 3 gfs in a row. did he under achieve? winning comps isn't easy and i'm thankful that he helped us win one.

Jack, agree however, any coach with a Thurston or Lockyer or Fittler in their side will give you a tilt at the title.
Fittler was at his career best from 2000-2004. It's no coincidence we featured in 4 of those GF's.

Ricky is the ultimate competitor both on and off the field, so much so that he has a tendency to grind his players especially his half-backs.....just ask Finchy - to this day he despises him. George Williams is another.
Ricky puts unnecessary pressure and lambasts his halves. He's come out and said on more than one occasion that in his opinion the half-back decides the outcome of a game! Fark, not the sort of leader i'd like to play for. The media (Ricky's mates) have painted George Williams as a whining pom but there's always two sides and i reckon he just had enough of the tyrant's ways.

Typical journalist being as negative as possible and trying to pick fault with everything. Like the self absorbed flogs at the covid press conferences every day. Unable to just enjoy it for what it was - an interview with Ricky that never claimed to be an expose on every single aspect of his coaching career. What a sorry bunch of uptight wankers they are.

No arguments there Gman....another observation is that Ricky doesn't really seem to have "grown" as a Coach despite years of experience.

Ego alone, he would disagree with you.
If i was a CEO or Chairman of a RL club there's absolutely no way i would employ him as a Head Coach or Director of Coaching.
On the other hand, i would happily invite him along, one-off in a guest speaker/motivational role.

Lol. You obviously haven’t followed Rickys coaching career. There is a trail of destruction behind him wherever he has been and it continues to be that way.

If you want to speak about journalists, let’s talk of the Crawley brothers and their old central coast mate, Paul Kent. How they give Ricky the ride he enjoys to not only keep his job but receive a tv special about how great he is. Hardly fair and balanced.

Ever since the Michael Jordan doco and espn 30 for 30, networks have been trying to manufacture content to satisfy their subscription services. It doesn’t work when you only tell half the story.
                                ..it’ll be interesting to see
