  • Roosters have been in contact with Brandon Smith's agent to express their interest

The Sydney Roosters have finally identified the player they want to replace champion forward Boyd Cordner – Melbourne Storm dynamo Brandon Smith.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Roosters boss Nick Politis and general manager of football Daniel Anderson have already reached out to Smith’s New Zealand-based agent, Stan Martin.

Smith will be the hottest player on the NRL open market when he is free to talk to rival clubs from November 1 in what will become a multimillion-dollar battle between super coaches Craig Bellamy and Trent Robinson for his signature.

“The Roosters have expressed an interest,” Martin said from across the ditch.

“We haven’t spoken about money or figures but they’ve indicated that they are very keen to chat come November 1.

“Daniel Anderson and Nick Politis both called me four or five weeks ago. (not long after Cordner announced his retirement.)

“There are four or five other clubs who are interested as well.”

Martin expects the offers to be worth around the $1 million-a-season mark, more than double what he is earning, once negotiations begin.

“As a manager I think he’s worth $1 million a year, but whether he gets that we’ll wait and see,” Martin said.

“At the end of the day it will be Brandon’s decision. Melbourne Storm and the Roosters are two great clubs to be considering.”

There has also been strong interest from the Gold Coast Titans and the Canterbury Bulldogs plus the Redcliffe Dolphins, who are bidding to become the NRL’s 17th team.

It’s believed the Roosters would recruit Smith to play a role as a middle forward and hooker option, given they already have lock Victor Radley and No.9 Sam Verrills on their books.

The Roosters rarely miss the mark when chasing the biggest names in the game of the calibre of James Tedesco or five-eighth Luke Keary.

It’s not just their chequebook but the appeal to play under Robinson at Sydney’s glamour club.

Last December, Smith requested a release so he could become a full-time hooker from next season.

Smith has now decided that he will see out the final year of his contract at Storm next season because he is guaranteed a starting spot in the forwards.

With Dale Finucane joining the Cronulla Sharks, Bellamy would be keen for Smith to be the club’s long-term lock with Harry Grant playing at hooker.

Whatever the case, Smith is determined the contract talks will not affect his football in the build-up to the finals.

“Brandon’s really enjoying his footy and he’s keen to keep this low key at the moment,” Martin said.

“But I’m telling you the truth – there’s a lot of interest out there, not just from the Roosters.”

Smith has played 79 matches for the Storm since debuting in 2017

The Roosters’ position is interesting in that there is talk that front-rower Sio Siua Taukeiaho will be leaving at the end of the season, possibly to play in the UK Super League.

However the club still needs to lock down Angus Crichton and Joey Manu on long-term deals.

There is no doubt that the cheese is a devasting and damaging player. I personally don't think he's worth 1 million a season as he needs more polish on his game in the 9 jersey. That'll come i suppose.

Of course his manager would say that he worth a ton, its in his best interests.

If we could fit him in around verills and rads for a price that dosen't mean we have to cut half a dozen players so to speak, im all for it.

What would you pay him though? Probably worth 800k, but if he wants to play hooker, I don’t think he would want to come here since it would be no different to the storm situation.

After all our player losses this year, if we don’t make a couple of big name signings we will become a fringe 8 team.

500 to 600 k tops- you don't pay overs for a dummy half - i think the way the game is speeding up designated dummy halves are on the way out as are small halves- As i said before - A non designated dummy half is the way forward.

The days where the hooker and halves were mostly the 3 smallest players on your team are fast declining as they are a liability in defence due to their size - yes dummy halves make a lot of tackles but they are also targetted in defence same as the halves are targetted in defence.

Coaches have dummy halves defending in the middle against the big boppers and halves defending 3 in on each side were they are targetted in defence - not sure why halves don't defend on the wing - anyway bigger more agile players will be playing in the halves going forward and no need for a specialist dummy half with a floating or non designated dummy half.

The Cronk factor may play a role in coercing Smith to sign regardless of contract money due to the long term factor of business connections linked to the RWB club and it’s directors.

Loved this snippet at the end after he has come out and said the Roosters are after him and he thinks he's worth a million.

So Teddy, Keary and Cheese are going to take up 1/3 of our cap? Plus we are confident of re-signing Manu. If we sign him for $1M I will buy a sombrero.

We won’t pay overs for him. Leave that to teams like the dogs or tigers. We are lucky that under Robbo players don’t come for money. We have to be in the ballpark only.

Didn't he sign a contract extension last week, the media tell so many lies they forget what they said 5 minutes ago.
Storm and Roosters will offer $500,000 knowing that's his worth and a premiership thrown in.
Dogs, Titans & Tigers will throw $1,000,000 but I don't see him going to a club just to play the regular season.
We are after him and rarely miss so would be surprised if we miss out on signing him.
