  • NRL 2021: Roosters stars deny they deliberately concede six again calls

NSW Origin star Angus Crichton has hit back suggestions his Roosters are “taking the p...” and deliberately conceding Six Again infringements, stressing coach Trent Robinson “roasts” any player who incurs such penalties.

The NRL’s controversial Six Again ruling is again under the spotlight, with several teams — including the Roosters — accused of either deliberately slowing down the ruck or standing offside as a spoiling tactic, knowing they will not concede a full penalty.

Over the weekend, Channel 9 commentators Brad Fittler and Peter Sterling both took aim at the growing trend, which the NSW coach described as ‘taking the p***’.
Given the issue was also a key talking point after the State of Origin decider, NRL Head of Football Graham Annesley has since gone public to state his officials have been told to use the sin bin if teams continue to blatantly abuse the rule.
However both Crichton and Roosters No.6 Drew Hutchison stressed on Monday that they are not being coached to deliberately give away Six Again penalties as a defensive tactic.

Both Fittler and Sterling pointed outed out how, against the Cowboys, Robinson’s side conceded three set restarts in as many plays late while defending their tryline and leading by six.

Referee Ashley Klein declined to halt play however, just as he didn’t use the sin bin for any of the three incidents which came within the space of about 60 seconds.

When quizzed on the tactic, Crichton said it was not something his side had deliberately set out to do during their win over the Cowboys.

“You never want to give away penalties or six again's,” he said. “Every single time I do reviews and I’ve given away a Six Again (infringement) I get roasted by the coach. So our coaches are definitely not trying to encourage us to give six again's away.”
Hutchison agreed, stressing the spoiling tactic was not something his side was using as a tactic.
“I don’t think it’s ever used tactically,” he said.
“Any time you give away six again, it’s really putting pressure on your own team.”
Instead, he said it was an individual decision “that some people make”.
“Sometimes it hurts your team, sometimes it slows the ruck down,” he said. “There’s no right way to use it.
“So I can’t say we use it as a tactic, no.”
Asked about the recent spate of Six Again penalties on The Sunday Footy Show, Fittler said: “We had the same in Origin — three on one tackle and we didn’t make five metres.
“Sides realise now, especially on early tackles, they’re giving up a tackle. We’ve got to have a look at that rule, I believe - especially with the 10 metres and switching that back to penalties. Teams are just taking the p***.”
Asked if he was happy with the rules the way they were, Crichton continued: “It doesn’t matter if I’m happy with it or not.
“I understand they (the NRL) are trying to make the game better to view.
“And I feel like as a player you have to get on with what they’ve given us, which is a Six Again rule change.
“All I can do is try my best to try and win football games and incorporate that into my game. And I think as a club we’ve trained about having faster game play, having more players to defend your line and defending more players in the games.
“That’s all you can really do.”

why is it us all of a sudden. One game where we give away a few six again on our line.
they are right about team giving away 6 again on he first tack when the opposition is trapped on their line but why pick on us.

IMO they do it because our goal line defence is pretty good.

Similarly, did NSW intentionally 'concede' all those 6-agains that allowed QLD to stay in touch during the final game? Teddy and Freddie both sounded pretty darn confused about it all. They were both like 'what disciplinary issues?!? If you identify an area of poor discipline then happy to correct it but you just called 6 again with no explanation so I'm a bit confused why you even did that... even Billy Slater had no idea, maaaaate'.

There's absolutely no reason to concede 6-agains (particularly late in the set, which is invariably the case when we're getting hammered by such calls). There's isolated circumstances where you'll take a penalty rather than a try. However, even then you risk a sin-bin by doing so... so you don't fark around.

The Crichton offside was the only legitimate 6 again. The Walker and Liu calls were rubbish and typical Klown bias.
Annesley has addressed it so that pretty much confirms that the rules have been changed again. As is always the case in these scenarios, I guarantee we'll have someone sin-binned for repeat 6 agains this week.
My solution, just get rid of the 6 agains...and the dope V'landys while we're at it

‘The Roosters concede the most 6 agains because they intentionally give them away’ this is just proof that the morons at NRL changed the game as a result of the penalties that we allegedly intentionally gave away in 18 and 19, this excuse was used then because no team could crack us now it’s being used again even though we’re like the 5th best defensive team in the comp wow just wow!

The only time I bet is during the Melbourne Cup, I’m going to make an exception, is there a market for players getting sin binned? If so this will be a wise investment come Friday.

BS argument that the Roosters do this deliberately. If you want to see deliberate, watch the R18 'dogs vermin game from last Sunday. The 'dogs repeatedly and deliberately conceded six again calls as the ball emerged from a vermin-fed scrum.

It annoys me that this article cites the Roosters specifically and that the Roosters are AGAIN the MOST penalised team in the comp.

To say teams don't deliberately concede set restarts is away with the pixies stuff though one has to say honestly

Maybe a case for a 5 minute sin bin for these - repeated infringements including professional fouls.

They could also tweak the rule where the second set restart is a penalty enabling the non offending team to kick for touch or a quick tap.

A problem with the set restart is if you lose possession on the first tackle - make the first tackle of the set restart a 0 tackle so if you lose the ball the ref can then go back to the place on the field where the offence was committed and award a penalty to the non offending team if no field advantage was gained. i.e a team awarded a set restart could make 20 to 90 metres on the first tackle and lose the ball - the ref won't then go back to where the offence was committed and give a penalty as some sort of advantage was gained

People have also come up with a range of suggestion in this area such the offending player being sent to a penalty box such as in ice hockey for a period of time or sets which is doubled for future offences by the same player.

It could work this way if they go down the ice hockey route or 5 minute sin bins

                  First offence

                  2 minutes

                  2nd offence

                  4 minutes

                  3rd offence

                  8 minutes

                  4th offence

                  Sin bin 10 minutes

I don't know how happy the hierarchy at the roosters would be with Freddie pointing that out considering how harshly we are judged by certain referees because as sure as night follows day it will lead to them being even more vigilant on us infringing close to our line and looking to bin us.
Fittler got a dose of lopsided rulings by Sutton in origin which is what the roosters have had to deal with for years.

Not surprising Sterling was leading the protests against us during commentary on the weekend. Wonder what we did to him. He doesn’t like us much.

Sounds like Freddy is still bitter that his decison to pick the wrong halves in Origin cost him a 3-0 whitewash.

Instead of putting his hand up to admit his mistake he and Alexander has instead blamed the refs for the loss..

Seems like he's tried to throw us under the bus to reinforce his argument.

Maybe he harboured a desire to play for the roosters but we had Horrie at the time and didn’t offer him a contract.

Klein the Klown had a off game reffing us hence the article.
Klein was not up to his usual standard of being unjust. Likely we get Cummins this week.
