That’s where my name came from. He was our most creative player.

That was against Norths at the SFS, Easts won 16-14 from memory.

Salvo had a good step and was very shrewd at playing the short side which is a forgotten art by big men in the modern game.

He head butted a Penrith player up at Penrith Park in either 92 or 93, Roosters had just scored a fantastic try to Jeff Orford to give Easts the lead then Penrith kicked off to resume play and Salvo head butted one of the Panther players and was sent off, they never recovered after that losing about 5 or 6 games in row with Salvo suspended and Garry Freeman unavailable during that time.

The old Dunbar Raider. Salvo is my favourite Rooster of all time.

I remember Salvos first grade debut at Shark Park in 1987, scored a try and was instrumental in the match winning try to Slippery Morris also. That was the game where Joe Lydon scored that great side stepping try.

That was a great game. Lydon was on fire that day.

Were Rod Silva, Gary Freeman and Salvo ever in the same squad? Or does Freeman pre-date them all?

We always had the wood on Norths in those days, when wins were very, very rare for us. We were worse than them on the table pretty much...

                        But we had the wood.

Oh my word yes. We were leading the comp after 5 games and then Salvo got sent off at Penrith and we ended up missing the semis by finishing 6th.

Was that the year we started with the streak? Must have been. What was it, 1990?

When my mum finally ended up buying me my first easts jersey in about 89-90, I went down to the shopping Center with it and was about to get Hugh Mcgahan number on the back, but because his had two numbers I didn’t have enough money(was probably only $10 more), so chose salvos number 8 instead.
