  • Our man Toops

    I'm just trying to think of a more underrated player in recent years than Roosters legend Daniel Tupou.

    He is the complete modern day winger. A great finisher, brilliant in the air, his carries out of our own end are strong, and he's also a reliable defender. And as a character you won't find a more humble and likeable teammate.

    And yet when he gets picked for Origin it's some sort of shock. And when Origin the next year rolls around his name is always absent from pundits team lists even though he's been absolutely brilliant.

    He had a couple of down years around 2016-2017 but since 2018 he has been a man possessed. Always one of our best every week. The freak that is Brett Morris is the only winger I've seen be as or more consistently brilliant the past couple of years at all aspects of wing play.

    Brian To'o has been amazing this year; but if you want to risk the pygmie up against Xavier Coates or Val Holmes under the high ball well good luck because maybe it's just my Roosters bias but Toops deserves to keep that wing spot.

    So here's a salute to Toops. Roosters legend and future all time leading try scorer for the club.

    I don't think Toups is underrated.
    All commentators praise his efforts nearly every game.
    The fact he was chosen for SOO last year confirms that. He also plays for Tonga.
    To'o has had a good year and deserves to be in discussions for SOO selection but as a biased Roosters supporter Toups deserves the SOO as incumbent and the fact he has done nothing wrong to lose the jumper.
    Unfortunately everyone's on the Panthers show pony bandwagon so Toups may very well lose his spot.

    As I said previously, had Keary, Friend, Bmoz, Collins and Verrills been in the team permanently then nobody would be talking about Turbo taking Teddy's spot and To'o taking Toups'.

      Better for Easts.

        After 20I3 i thought he was going to be anything. I then became his s no 1 hater 2015/16 & 17. In defence always caught out running in, ran the ball sideways, would get driven driven back and would try and pop an impossible pass that would get dropped. He was even timid going for the high ball.

        Then in 2018 something clicked. All that rubbish left his game and he went into beast mode- big time. I now think he is the greatest Rooster winger since 1908- i cant think of anyone better.

          Bill Mullins was a great wing.
          Mini was also sensational on the wing. One can only guess how many tries he would have scored had he stayed on the wing.
          But Toups is right up there with our best.

            On track to be a one club man as well.

              Toops has come a long way. IMHO he is now the best winger in the comp. His confidence has grown enormously. He always bends the defensive line taking the early hit ups. Is never out jumped. His first try the other night, millimetres from the sideline and he didn't panic. Grace under pressure. He reminds me of Mark Waugh. He looks casual and lazy at times, but rather he is calm and in total control of the moment. One attribute of a great athlete is they appear to have more time.

                Salute! Big time.

                The only one I would consider swapping him for is The Fox - and that's only to consider it.

                  A true Rooster, can't fathom fans ever hating on him, or any of our guys for that matter.

                  At the risk of breaching copyrite on Ism22s hypenated dot points:
                  - wish Voss would stop with the Giraffe thing;
                  - wish Toups would at least give a slight smile when he scores. Looks like he's going in for root canal therapy;
                  - love the hard way he hits the line now and sets up the ruck.

                  Onya Dan!

                    Toops is in the elite class of winger no doubt, would not swap him for anyone . A humble bloke as mentioned he will go down as one of our best ever . In years gone by Kerry Boustead was a favourite of mine . A great East's winger . Lightning fast and evasive with scorching acceleration , also a try scoring sensation .

                        wouldn't be out of place in our team of the century. hope he stays a 1 club player and smashes the roosters try scoring record

                          The only winger in the comp better than Toops is Brett Morris.

                          The likes of JAC, To'o, Johnson, Fergo are daylight 3rd

                              tupou is probably the most complete winger in the comp now that bmoz's career might sadly be over.

                              he should be playing SOO no question
