  • Teddy on skates

I read something a while back that Teddy moved to much shorter boot studs after his numerous knee injuries. The theory at the time was that the longer ones were a contributing factor in his injuries.

I've noticed that he has a propensity to slip ALOT in games these days and naturally this is leading to a fair few head knocks. Could the shorter studs be a factor in this given you wouldn't have as much grip especially as the ground gets more slippery during the colder months.

You raise an interesting point Farian.
Teddy does wear the shorter studs to protect him from knee injuries.
It would be interesting to see if Smith, Rads, Verrills, Keary, Collin and Bmoz were wearing the longer studs when they got their ACLs.

He changed his running style to shorter strides in a semi crouched position as well, on advice from a specialist.

I was thinking the same thing Dr, what do you think you should prescribe for the patient? It's an interesting one, wear the short studs and get clobhered around the head, possibly concussed and shorten your career and lifetime brain issues or wear the long ones and possibly do an ACL.

I have watched the last couple shoulder charge incidents with Teddy in slow motion and he doesn't lose his footing. He seems to intentionally lift both knees in attempt to fall to the ground. Ironically in an effort to protect himself. Judge for yourself.

As an aside, the NRL have removed the Eels half-time incident from their highlights package. How convenient.

Is it more a balance thing? . He has exceptional balance but often the swerving and ducking every which way takes him way past tipping point. Mostly he retrieves the situation at other times he's too ambitious.

                  here is the article.

Sydney Roosters superstar No.1 James Tedesco refuses to wear long studs on his boots for fear of suffering a serious knee injury.

Tedesco will never forget his NRL debut in 2012 when he ruptured his ACL, and made a point of steering clear of lengthy studs that gripped deep into the ground.
Twists and turns: James Tedesco's low centre of gravity and his speed when changing directions are two of the main factors behind his tendency to slip.CREDIT:AAP

Arguably the game's best fullback was spotted slipping over several times against Cronulla in his first finals game – he has often hit the deck when changing direction at full speed all season – but will not tinker with his boots for better grip.

He looked out and admired the surface at Allianz Stadium this week, but knows the cool evening will almost guarantee a dewy deck against South Sydney on Saturday night.

"I don't feel comfortable wearing them too long because of that experience,'' Tedesco told Fairfax Media, in reference to the Leichhardt Oval debut.

"I'd rather slip over than do my ACL again. Obviously it's a pretty vivid memory for me.

"Some of the other boys don't even wear studs and don't slip over.

"Half of it must be mental. Early in the game when I'm thinking 'don't slip', that's when I slip, but when I'm playing footy later in the game I'm sweet.''
He's got so much force going through those hips and backside and legs and sometimes he can come unstuck.

Anthony Minichiello, the former Roosters No.1 pin-up – and the key man who delivered Tedesco to Bondi – said the latest owner of his old jersey was prone to tumble because of the speed and power he generated before he changed direction.

"He's got so much force going through those hips and backside and legs and sometimes he can come unstuck,'' Minichiello said.

"Even though he is prone to slipping over, because he's got a running style where he's so low to the ground and a low centre of gravity, it actually helps him bust tackles.''

Tedesco continues to run for more than 200m a game, the one statistic he takes a keen interest in, but would arguably nudge 300m if he stayed upright.

I would have thought that his ‘ducking/lower’ motion is just part of his high level agility and ability to change direction very quickly at top speed where he lowers his core to hit a hole created from defenders sliding across. He tries then to duck under any defender’s reaches or pass to someone in the hole (coming from a lower position) but often loses his footing or runs into the defender.

Pretty hard to do - you have to be very mobile and strong in your core to do it that fast and then accelerate off at that speed

When I switched to Blades it only took 3 games and I did my ACL. Maybe a coincidence but I did some research and there is some supporting evidence.

So ironically, we're at the center of this controversy again stemming from the brown Hutchinson incident, to now the Roosters are going to get favoured because teddy falls in tackles.(to get penalties?) What a madman.

I'm half with Fittler and gallen. Someone's running/playing style shouldn't be a problem, but surely there's a line to not cross in order of self preservation.

Like, teddy won't last long in the game deliberately falling to gain head high penalties, so when it came to that tackle on the weekend, I felt the onus was on both him and the tackler.

Rather sitillis one was obvious and totally avoidable. Yet both went for 10.

So he did his knee in 2012 blaming the long studs and has been wearing the shorter ones ever since. So he basically has been wearing the shorter studs for past 6 or 7 years ...why has the constant 'slipping' over only been a problem for last year or so ?

One of the ex-player commentators made reference to more players using cleats (?) for more grip but placing too much stress on knees.

Because the whole concussion thing has come to the fore in the last 2 years or so.
