  • One or more Morris to go around again? I hope so

    https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/morris-brothers-could-part-ways-in-retirement-call-20210412-p57ihf.html

Roosters star Brett Morris has denied he and twin brother Josh are a package deal and has tossed up the possibility of one brother retiring from the game this year while the other chooses to play on.

The Morris brothers both signed one-year contract extensions at the end of the 2020 season and are off-contract at the end of the year.

Both are in sublime form and have proved a stable rock through the club’s recent injury crisis.

NRL Highlights: The Roosters pull of an epic comeback against the Sharks.

The Roosters host the Sharks at the SCG in round 5 of the 2021 NRL Premiership.

Turning 35 in August, the Morris brothers now have a decision to make as to whether they will go on for one more year.

Josh said he will wait 6-8 weeks to make a decision to see where he is feeling mid-season, while Brett says he has given it no thought whatsoever.

“We’re not a package deal that’s for sure,” Brett declared.

“We both have very different bodies and different wants and needs out of rugby league.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time now so there’s no need to think about it or talk about it, I suppose if I want to go on with it, that’s an avenue to go down later in the year.”

The Roosters winger has already scored 11 tries across just five games for this year and has played an integral part in the club’s current second ladder position.

“Being an older guy people always ask you about [retirement]” Morris said. “It helps when you’re winning, as well as when you pull up sweet from games.

“But there’s also other external factors, the kids are getting a lot older now and they’re starting to do a lot more things outside of football that I want to be a part of as well. There are all those other factors that contribute to whether you go around again or not.”

Josh was hopefully the club would allow them to play on until 36 if they had the desire to play in 2022.

“If we want to continue hopefully the Roosters have it,” Josh said.

“My body feels pretty good at the moment.”

One of the major factors in the Morris brothers being eager to remain in the game is the youngsters coming through.

Sam Walker’s seven magical minutes seals great Roosters comeback win

For Brett, the experience he can offer players like Sam Walker continues to be invaluable.

The Roosters will come up against the Storm on Friday and it will be the 18-year-old’s biggest test yet. The teenager has pulled on the no. 7 jersey over the past two weeks to replace Luke Keary, who will remain on the sidelines for the rest of the year with an ACL injury.

“It’s funny - someone showed me a thing the other day that said I played against his old boy and now I’m playing with him, so that made me feel really old,” said Brett.

“But those [young] guys, they’re great to have around the club, they’re always wanting to learn. They’re always asking questions,” he said. “We want them to keep building and keep learning.”

I feel like this will be Brett’s last year, even last year he seemed more reluctant than Josh to stay on, we’re all very glad he did though lol

He has won 2 comps which would make retiring that bit easier. Whatever happens they’ve been amazing buys for us, both of them have blown their expectations completely out of the water.

Id be happy to see them both go round again, but if either or both of them call it quits no one is going to begrudge them.

They are both still so very good.

I would love to see both go around for one more year, with Brett breaking Ken Irvine's all time try scoring record which would be a monumental achievement.

I get the feeling Brett would be the one that goes the extra year. No reason, just a feeling.

Any views of offering Fergo a one year deal if one or both Morris's don't play on?

Hope they both sign on for one more year..

Would love nothing more than sending them off with a Premiership win, and if it’s not this year then surely next year with Keary back and the halves and hooking positions more settled we would be a better chance than ever..

Was thinking the same but have you seen him play the last couple of games? Even more mistakes than usual. And his running game out of his danger end is nowhere near as potent as it was. His positives use to outweigh his negatives but now I’m not sure. But who knows maybe he’d fire up at a proper club. Can’t see it happening though. I bet Matto would love to come back.

Would have to halve his salary to be worth it.

They still seem as keen as mustard and show no signs of losing motivation but a season can get long with niggles. They both are still two of the most eager kick chasers in the game which is a pretty good indicator to me that they haven't lost any enthusiasm for the game, I wish Toups would chase as hard. I'll be happy if they continue.

Yeh his fumbles seem to be more frequent at Parra than at the Chooks. I think he has a couple of years of NRL left in him - Matto might be joining Friend in retirement or have a Cords type stint on the sideline.

I would imagine suaalii would have first crack at any opening in the outside backs before we try sign anyone?
