Sydney Roosters skipper Jake Friend has started informing his closest friends and teammates that he will retire immediately from the sport.

The veteran hooker, who has suffered 20 concussions throughout a decorated career, last night informed his closest confidants at the Roosters that he will not play another game in the NRL after 264 games and 14 seasons at the top level.

Friend, who will go down as one of the club’s greatest competitors, was heavily concussed and was seen convulsing on the surface at the Sydney Cricket Ground following a head knock in the opening round victory against Manly.

It was his third concussion in six months, prompting serious conversations about his welfare and health if he decided to return to the field.

Part of the reason Friend has decided to hang up the boots is because the perspective he gained from the birth of his first child just days before he suffered the career-ending head knock in his side’s thumping first round victory over the Sea Eagles.

The Sydney Roosters are expected to make an official announcement in the next 48 hours. The club is now finalising the financial implications of his decision to retire. The Roosters won’t be entitled to salary cap relief for the remainder of the season.

    More to come

Wishing him the best in retirement. Disappointing news, especially because he didn’t get to play a final game in front of our fans, but I’m sure he’ll get the right send off and Politis/Roosters will look after him.

True roosters legend - 3 time premiership winner, captain, origin, Australia, world club champion - did it all. Still remember his debut in 2008 back when I was in school. Sad day for rugby league

so this won’t be classed as medical retirement regarding salary cap? Shows the welfare for players regarding head knocks - ridiculous

Faaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrkkkkk, dosent make it any easier kinda knowing beforehand. Weve had his defensive efforts for 10 years now. That performance he produced in the 2018 will never be forgotten. Wish you all the best for family and future Champion.

Dosent concern me greatly, but am curious as to why this wouldn't come off our cap.

A very sombre day. Friendy may well be the toughest Rooster of the NRL era.

That's the second one club champion to retire in the space of a few games. It feels like a real changing of the guard.

Congrats on an amazing career, Jake. Three Premierships including two as captain during our greatest ever era and 250+ 1st grade games for the one club.

No doubt Politis will give him the send off he deserves as one of our greatest ever and will also look after him in retirement.

Congratulations to Friendy on an amazing career. Never the flashiest but did the dirty work and was a rock defensively for many years. Won’t forget his 2018 and 19 defensive efforts any time soon. To be sacked by the club and then return to play on for 10+ years is a great redemption story. All the best.

Best of luck Friendy mun. You’ve been a great servant for the mighty RWB.

On a side note, Pretty disappointing if it’s been leaked by a player or official tbh. I didn’t think we were that sort of club.
