  • Play the ball from touch - not in own 20

I noticed in round 1 how tough it is to run the ball out from a PTB vs scrum when you are on your own try line.

I like the idea of speeding up the game, but you have a much better chance of making some ground from a scrum vs running into a line of set defenders. This actually achieves the opposite outcome of speeding up the game.

It will also encourage 5th tackle kicks into touch near a defenders try line when forcing a drop-out looks too hard, so that they can restrain the opposition from making too many metres of their first few tackles.

To make this fair, I reckon it should still be a scrum if the ball is kicked into touch within 20m of your own goal line to give the restarting team a chance to have a bit more of a run.

Maybe give the team the option of the scrum or the play the ball

I noticed that DCE grubbered into touch close to the corner post in the first half. I think this was an example of what you describe. He tried again in the second, but the ball went dead.

That would work too, but who would want to play the ball into a set defensive line? It could only work on a quick play the ball, but you wouldn't see that too often and I'm not sure if it's allowed like the quick line-out in yawnion.

How about a tap restart ? Usually make more metres off a tap than a play the ball.

How about we stop f*cking with the rules? The game was fast enough last year. I don't get the obsession with speeding up the game. Not everyone wants to see an avalanche of points every week. There's nothing wrong with a good tough ground-out contest. Our 4 - 0 win over Manly in the semi-finals was one of the best games of footy I've seen. Not enough value is placed on defense in our game by the rule makers.

I agree. Its gets confusing and the game is surely fast enough.

I with Sterlo on this too many rule changes - how fast do they want the game to be ?

I wonder if this will be monitored and reviewed during the season or only at seasons end ? -Surely player welfare is paramount and just like a workplace/site etc WH&S laws should prevail - safe working environment

Should be looking at having two subs in additional to 4 reserves that can be used to replace players ruled out of a game through injury or failed hia's. 17 on 17.

Sure if you have more than 2 players ruled out of a game it will 17 on less than 17 - But 2 Subs would cover most games.

What next less players - 11 vs 11- I remember Warren "Wok" Ryan suggesting this

Yep, said it another thread. The current style of play is going to push a lot of big guys out of the game or at least limit their time on the field. I watch footy for the contest, the physicality and the spectacle. Close game is a good game! I don't think there will be many close contests this season.

I like your idea if they are going to persist with these new rule changes (which I don't like). There will be unintended consequences to speeding the game up/keeping the ball in play longer and I hope more injuries isn't one of them.

The 4-0 game vs Manly was the best game I have experienced live at the SFS. Edge of your seat for the whole 80 minutes.

Why the obsession with speeding the game up every season?
