point still stands though that nirvana ( who i do actually lile ) are tremendously overrated. compare them to say soundgarden a closer comparison ( although soundgarden did have many metal songs ) and talent wise its the 2013 roosters vs 2016 newcastle knights .

bands like iron maiden , metallica , soundgarden had 10 x the talent and don't get anywhere near the plaudits.
Certainly it was a quantum leap to go from Bleach with 40k odd sales to Nevermind that was selling 400k a week on release. Did MTV play a part possibly as Smells like Teen Spirit was heavily promoted and played as well as requested by viewers.. Come as you are also.
Of course the sudden global fame has it's pitfalls especially for people already fighting as they say life's inner demons as this can only exacerbate these.
Nevermind is a classic Album though as is Never Mind the Bollocks/ Dark side of the Moon / Sgt Peppers/ Abbey Road/ London Calling/ Pet Sounds/Rumours/Harvest/Tapestry.
People say the same thing about The Beatles -right place and right time- but that only lasts for a short time before people move onto something else. I don't think many or any bands could stop touring at the peak of their fame and not only maintain but increase their popularity as The Beatles did only releasing singles and album with the odd film or 2/cartoon thrown in for good measure.

id disagree on the beatles, bar ringo who wasn't a great drummer , the rest were probably slightly above average musicians. however what the beatles did have was 3 absolutley outstanding songwriters, particualrly lennon and mccartney and harrison was no mug as evidenced by some of his solo material .
i guess it is worth noting that any debate about music will always be down to personal choice, just because i far prefer iron maiden or metallica , the vast majority of the population probably prefer nirvana. not sure if this makes it right or not.
anyway go the chooks.
