  • Wayne Challis

Watching Fox atm and its an 89 game v the Dogs. Wayne Challis is on the wing and looks like he could play front row. Anyone know what happened to him that season? Was he injured for most of the season and put on a heap?

I remember watching him play a game against Parramatta where we were down by 20 or so at the half. He scored a screamer of a try in the 2nd half using his amazing speed.

In this game he's as big as the back rowers.

Didn’t he break his arm that year?

He was very big for a winger.

I think that was Challis's one and only first grade game in 1989 and from the bench - Roosters Player number 784 - Games 52 -26 tries. mmm 51 games and 26 more tries than the legendary Spiro Strattos ( # 705) - 1 game for the Chooks off the Bench vs Penrith in 1979.

Ah that was the year 1979 that Joe "Your such a fabulous Dancer" Reaiche (# 685) was top point scorer in first Grade for the Chooks with 69 points - 3 tries and 30 goals - No Scanlon footy card of Joe or even Spiro either in 1979.

Challis must have gave the game away at the end of 1989

Thanks Horrie. He was a flyer.

We had some bloody good players in that team. Gary Wurth, one of my favourite Chooks. Big Hugh was a champion who deserved to play in a better side. And Ronnie Gibbs of course.

I had that album Salvo and bought it for $1 in the Church St Mall in Parra.

Eric Grothe Snr did a brilliant version of Joe Cocker's The Letter..The rest were forgettable..

There were some good players in that side as you say, Ronnie Gibbs, Hughie, Gary Wurth, John Ferguson , Paul Dunn , also Robert Simpkins was very good for us too.

Couldn't find it on you tube but have on video Wayne Challis scoring for us against Canterbury at Henson back in 1987 when he swooped on a ball Glen Frendo tried to knock over the dead ball line, Challis scored to level the scores at 14-14 then David Smith converted from the sideline to give us a memorable 16-14 win.

Gary Wurth was one of my faves ...Ina better team he wouldve been a legend.
I was at the Parra game.

Did you see the look on Gus Gould's face, when he was sitting in the stands during that 1989 game ? In the second half the camera focused on him after a Bulldog's try and at full time. He looked like he was going to cry. I guess he was told that Chris Anderson was getting the coaching job for 1990.

Yes i remember watching Wayne Challis in his first trial match for the Roosters at the old Sports Ground and he scored a hat trick.

He was extremely talented, had size and raw speed. Theres been wingers with half of his talent that played for Australia.

Challis came down to the Roosters from QLD to play under Artie. His team mates played a little joke on him when he arrived and told him they were going to have a drinking bond session down at the pub & everyone was meeting up at The Albury Hotel on Oxford St. Being a Qlder Challis had no idea that pub was a popular gay establishment but he soon found out when he asked a patron for " a match" for a cig and got the reply "your place or mine?"

I do remember he went missing up north at the end of the 1988 season and was a no show for any of the teams training and trial games in 1989. Apparently he decided to see the outback in QLD riding his harley. By the time he did show (and i cant remember how they tracked him down or whether he just showed up) he was fat- really fat! He just gave the game away after that- in his mid 20s. A real bloody waste of talent- he could have been anything with a bit of commitment.

Id love to know what happened to him after footy
