I generally like Gus Gould, although I didn't watch his commentary last Friday night (as I tend to watch Kayo these days). If he death-rided us as badly as some on here have made out, then fair enough, it would be great to prove him wrong. I just hope that we haven't got to contend with Voss on FOX again, but I suspect we will. His antics annoyed me more than anything last week. I might have to switch back to Nine if he is calling the game.
    MRR or Rabid

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

NRL guru Phil Gould believes the Roosters are "not in the premiership hunt" following their historic 60-8 drubbing at the hands of the Rabbitohs.

Just a week out from finals, the reigning premiers were comprehensively played off the park by their cross-town rivals who recorded their biggest win ever of the Tricolours.

Gould didn't mince his words immediately after the loss when he claimed coach Trent Robinson faced a "major repair job" to get his side ready for an in-form Penrith side that have lost just one game this season.

But on Monday night the league icon went one further as he emphatically put a line through the Roosters' title hopes.

"There's no Cooper Cronk this year, there's no Latrell Mitchell," Gould told Nine's 100% Footy. "Some of the older players have been showing signs of wear and tear. They're back to back premiers. That takes a lot of toll out of your team. It's not the team it was.

"There were enough easy games in this competition to keep them ticking over, they were always going to hop on one leg and make it into the top-four. But they're just not in the premiership hunt at the moment, and it finally broke for them the other night, it really did. It looked like finally, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

"This is not the team they were. They've been up for a long time. Everyone plays against them like they're playing the defending premiers. They've played a lot of hard football. They're a good side but they're not a premiership side right now. You can't compare them to what they've been."

Friday night's loss was not just a shock for fans but caused a huge shock behind the scenes at the club.

I would imagine this little piece of journalism will be doing the rounds at training over the next few days

I remember Melon's Matchups being up put up in an opposition's dressing room. This was a team that was not expected to beat the Roosters...they flogged them. I think the same thing may happen to Penrith.

Gus loves writing us off. His pontifications are predictable, and bloody annoying. Obviously he knows a lot about footy, but the rule changes this year make the game much more unpredictable. We really have to take it up to Penrith, attack them both with and without the ball. They will try to take us up the middle with quick play the balls and offloads, our defence has to move up and hit them HARD. Angus has to smash Cleary at every opportunity.

If it's not Gus, it's Ikin, or Kenty, Buzz, Hooper, Brandy, Ennis, Rabbs...and many many more. Why care what they say especially when it's live? Gus didn't say anything worse that wasn't said here by some dubious fans...even some true fans were not so kind. Gus has to comment at all times, on air on the spot...Is he supposed to follow some script so as to not offend Roosters fans? Nah!!! I find a lot of fans wanting constant adulation about their teams even when they're team is coming last...It's like having Kenty or Gus's optimistic words will have a positive affect on their team, which it wont! If the truth hurts, then turn the volume down when they talk footy during or after a loss like this...I did! I didn't watch any footy shows until Monday other than specific games cause I didn't want to hear any post game commentary of Fridays game...

But having said that, I found that most if not all commentary since the loss agree that that Roosters side is not a true indication of who we are and Penrith will not be having it easy because they won 15 games and the MP. Many STILL pick the Roosters to be 3Peet Premiers, but obviously if they get back to the way we were before.

So as they say, Toughen Up cause it's only words!

gus is one of the clueiest commentators on the game but he doesn't always get it right. if he'd said this before last fri i'd have more respect but saying it after a loss in a comparatively meaningless game is unbalanced.

when he says things like 'But they're just not in the premiership hunt at the moment,' you figure he's having a bet each way. we're one game away from being back in the premiership hunt.

I have no issue with anybody being critical of last weeks performance, but to write us off and say we've been looking tired and now we're too old.......come on be fair dinkum. If he had been saying that for a few weeks, he might have some credibility, but to come out and say it now is just Gus being over the top

Ennis pisses me off more than anyone, he hates us with a passion, and Hooper keeps raving about the 50 point theory. We have a CHAMPION TEAM, I would make sure they see all the press writing them off, too old, too slow.... they have to make this PERSONAL..... watch them go on Friday

Exactly & that’s what sh|ts me on here unless your constantly saying nice things about the Roosters & only the Roosters people get bent out of shape.

The Roosters have been written off by some here as well and they are supposed to be ‘fans’. Gus has written us off during a game and then changes his opinion. Yes we all don’t like it but in the big picture, will his words affect the team in a negative way? Most likely not, instead it may make the team more determined. Hasn’t he done that before, on purpose just to get a player or a team to prove themselves? I recall Cronk blasting Shaun Johnson a few months ago and the result was that he took the criticism on board and came back and stood up for the Sharks.

I dont believe Gus has any animosity against the Roosters HC. From what I understand He and Nick are still close so he wouldn’t be writing lies...in fact, if anything and like I said, it will make our ‘old and tired players’ stand up while at the same time give the young punks at Penrith believe the hype and make them that little bit vulnerable thinking they will beat the old blokes. If anything, Gus would probably like Penrith to be successful but not with Ivan Cleary as coach because that’s where the animosity lies. If Penrith lose this week, watch him change his tune...let’s hope that happens!

The guy is a dickhead, on and off the TV.
Its funny, the Roosters don't want him and Penrith sacked him. He must have already put his money down

Most people would be burning to see the club that sacked them to be doing well, but he probably still wants to take credit
