  • Keary set to take less to stay with Roosters

I wonder if Andrew Webster will say this bit of news has got " a bit of smell about it". Maybe he should get his nose out of Wayne Bennetts arse

Taking one for the team: Keary set to take less to stay with Roosters

While David Fifita may not have been willing to stay at Brisbane for less, Luke Keary is on the verge of announcing a three-year extension with the Sydney Roosters for a pay packet well below what he would demand on the open market.

Keary, who isn’t off contract until the end of next year, is finalising a three-year extension with the back-to-back reigning champions worth around $2.8 million, averaging out at just over $930,000 per season, until 2024. The retention of fullback James Tedesco is also expected to follow for the Roosters in the coming months, locking in the duo they will build the club around.

While Keary will receive a pay rise of more than $200,000 per season, there’s little doubt he would have become the game’s latest million-dollar player if he went elsewhere. He was also being touted as a potential face of the Brisbane expansion team to enter the competition in 2022 or 2023.

Few would argue that he is the best playmaker in the NRL already, but his new deal won’t reflect that, proving some players are willing to stay for less to be part of special teams and play football in September.

Kieran Foran, Ash Taylor, Ben Hunt, Daly Cherry-Evans, Nathan Cleary, Michael Morgan, Anthony Milford and Mitchell Pearce are currently getting paid more than Keary will receive in his new deal.

If the Gold Coast Titans are willing to splash the cash and fork out $1.2m for Fifita, Keary could well demand similar figures given he has represented his country and won three NRL premierships during his career. He was also voted the best five-eighth in the NRL by his peers in the recent 2020 Players’ Poll.

Injuries have denied Keary the chance to play State of Origin, but the 2018 Clive Churchill Medal winner is expected to make his NSW debut in the No.6 jersey at the end of the year.

The 28-year-old, who helped set up the match-winning try in last season’s grand final against the Canberra Raiders, is entering the prime of his career having turned 28 at the start of the year and has taken his game to another level following the retirement of Cooper Cronk.

Unlike some players, Keary has recognised that if he demanded more than $1m to stay, it would cost the team elsewhere.

Such a payday could mean the Morris brothers wouldn’t be able to stay on for another season, or Tedesco wouldn’t be able to receive the type of money that reflects his new status as the best player in the game.

The Roosters, led by coach Trent Robinson and club supremo Nick Politis, have also recognised the importance of not paying overs. They offered Latrell Mitchell $800,000 last year, however he wanted more.

The Roosters wouldn’t budge, offering what they believed he was worth to their team, not what he could attract elsewhere.

Mitchell’s defection has opened the door for the tricolours to lure Sonny Bill Williams back to the NRL, with the dual international set to hop on a plane in the coming days bound for a Sydney hotel room for a fortnight of quarantine before rejoining his old club.

    $930,000...$1m close enough.
    Good move by the Roosters.
    Good move by Luke.
    Fair and reasonable all around.

Yes, agree, it will be very good news once confirmed. We just need to make sure that his head gets looked after as he has had his fair share of knocks. Other than that, he and Teddy are our two most important players, and so the value is more than fair.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

Certain players just want to see 7 digits no matter what ...'tunnel vision'. But Luke obviously sees life like he sees the football field ......great all round vision and awareness,.
But realistically, theres not much difference anyway between $1m & $930k .....even less after tax !

I wonder what Sam Walker's pathway to first grade is? Is Flanagan a temp?

I have always said that you have to work or in this case play where you will be happy. What good is it to be making more and have all the pressure of the world if you fail? I'm sure all those players with big pay packets but are failing to produce are not sleeping very comfortably with all the criticism they get every week. If Keary is happy to receive less than what he could get at the Titans or Broncos it's probably because he sees the bigger picture. His talent is shinning because he is happy where he is and going to another club to start all over again is just not that attractive to him. He left the vermin because he wasn't happy that Rusty was bullying some players because they didn't win after 2014 so he wouldn't want to make that mistake....One last thing though, I was watching NRL 360 last week and Paul Crawley was on discussing about the Dogs $3m war chest thing and Crawley said that the dogs have to invest in the halves with that and that Keary is coming off contract next year...I had a big chuckle thinking that Crawley thought that Keary would even contemplate signing with the dogs.

I hope Keary gets what he deserves. I'm so happy we discovered his talent!!!

Lets just hope that Shane Flanagan & the Walker brothers dont get a head coaching jobs & take their sons with them after being developed by the Roosters.

Webster is the first to admit it and keeps saying it, “players take less to stay at the roosters, anybody who thinks they don’t is delusional”

IMO culture is bigger than money. It's not as if Keary's gonna be poor if he takes (for example) $800k a season and if it's gonna be more fun for him (e.g. more development opportunities, more wins and more chances of being capped) then IMO it's a no brainer.

In aggregate if all your top-shelf players (who will be loaded regardless) take on average ~$200k less than they could be getting, then you can start rewarding up and coming talent with ~300-400k salaries (which keeps them around) rather than (like Souffs) offloading all your up and coming talent to get one fullback... who will play on your left wing anyway (when he isn't suspended or fishing/dirt-biking in Taree).

His pathway is the same as everyone else's. Train hard, stand out in the lower grades, live the values of the club and when you get your chance grab it with both hands.

I don't think there's any value in mapping out a pathway as elite sport is so unpredictable. How do you map out Latrell Mitchell having to replace RTS, Sam Verrils having to replace Jake Friend etc etc. Opportunities arise at the most random and unexpected of times.

Walker's pathway is simple, the moment he adds more value to the first team than the player who is in front of him is the moment he will get his chance.

That's a really healthy position to be in as a club, genuine competition for spots keeps performance levels high.
