Now I read that their contracts have been stuck back together and their sentences reduced to fines and game suspensions.

Morally and ethically very unacceptable, however it wasn’t illegal nor did they endanger the lives of anyone. Unlike some who intentionally flouted restrictions laws and exposed themselves and others to danger and then used culture as an excuse and got away with a fine and minor suspensions ( that were suspended ).
