  • Never Thought I Would See the Day

It's not the part about Robbo being the best coach. It's the part about us being far and away the club that players want to go to. I think the "transit lounge" is dead and buried. We have so many reasons to be proud of our club. Here's another one.

    https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/new...12-p55bda.html
Trent Robinson has dethroned Craig Bellamy as the best coach in the NRL after collecting a quarter of the votes in the 2020 NRL Players’ Poll, to be unveiled this afternoon.

The Sydney Morning Herald, in conjunction with NRL.com, conducted a poll of 150 players from across all 16 clubs over the past fortnight, with the full results to be published in two parts over the next two days. In part one of the two-day reveal (published online at midday), the players anointed the game’s best in each position, the premier player, the best buy, who they think will win the competition and which team they would join if they had to leave their club.

The Herald can today provide a sneak peek into the results, with the Roosters mentor leapfrogging two greats in Bellamy and Wayne Bennett to sit atop the leaderboard as the game’s best coach. If it wasn’t enough that the Sydney Roosters were crowned as the best team in the competition with a premiership triumph last year, the poll also revealed the Sydney Roosters as the No.1 destination for free agents, with almost a quarter of respondents voting the Eastern Suburbs club as the team they would most want to join if they had to leave their clubs.

It speaks volumes for what Robinson has been able to instil at the tricolours since taking over in 2013, transforming the club both on and off the field through what he has implemented.

In his first seven seasons in charge, which culminated with the grand final win against the Raiders last October, Robinson has led the Roosters to four minor premierships, three premierships and three World Club Challenge victories for an overall win rate of 64.9 per cent. After seven seasons in their respective careers, Bennett and Bellamy had won two premierships each (later stripped from the Storm). Bellamy also had three minor premierships in his first seven seasons, with Bennett claiming just the one in 1992 on his way to his first title.

The only blemish on Robinson’s coaching record is the club’s 2016 campaign, which was derailed before it began when Mitchell Pearce was hit with an eight-game ban for his Australia Day antics. The Roosters finished that season in 15th managing just six wins.

Robinson, who finished second in voting in the NRL Players’ Poll last year, topped the category with 24 per cent of votes, well ahead of Bellamy with 17 per cent. South Sydney coach Bennett finished third with 10 per cent, while Ivan Cleary and Adam O’Brien were recognised for their strong starts to 2020 for their respective clubs to finish in the top five.

Bellamy has won the best coach award since the NRL Players’ Poll began in 2018, with Robinson finishing third last year and missing out on the top five altogether the previous season.

While few will argue that Robinson, chasing three straight titles in 2020, prepares his teams to perfection, the club's recruitment has been its greatest strength with him in charge.

The acquisition of Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco, which cost them the services of favourite son Pearce, catapulted the Roosters into premiership heavyweights. There have been very few recruitment blunders. Luke Keary, Josh and Brett Morris and Kyle Flanagan are just a few of the recent purchases that Robinson has nailed.

The fact Robinson is held in such high regard in NRL circles is also highlighted in the Roosters receiving 23 per cent of votes from players asked which team they would want to join if they had to leave their current clubs.

Despite their dire predicament, the brand of the Broncos remains strong with 17 per cent of players choosing Brisbane ahead of the Storm, Knights and Sea Eagles.

        My favourite bit.

"If at the start of the season you had said that Latrell Mitchell would not feature in the top four buys of the year, you would have been accused of knowing very little about rugby league. But that's the way it has panned out. The winner of the buy of the year category will be announced at midday, however, the finalists include Parramatta's Ryan Matterson, Wests Tigers hooker Harry Grant, Penrith's Apisai Koroisau and the Roosters' Josh Morris. The winner collected 43 per cent of the votes."

Shove that in your "Book by Fools" Russ and suck a limp one while you're at it.

        Chook.

Great article but i don't believe the Transit lounge is dead & buried. It can always come back if the wrong people are in charge. Other clubs are going through it now.

When talking about The Storm, why do they invariably say "won two premierships" but these "were later stripped". They won nothing those years - they were disqualified. Nobody refers to Ben Jonson as "winning the 100m gold medal" in the 1988 Olympics - he too was found to be a cheat.

For me the Storm administration cheated , most of the players probably knew nothing of it . harsh to say they played and trained all year and never won the premiership
shows we are a great club , great administration , great coaches and great team . Most importantly great supporters but

I disagree that Latrell was expected to feature as a 'best buy' (I didn't expect putting him at FB while pulling strings to 'medically retire' Burgess + GI in order to sign him would do much). Doubt anybody woulda expected Morris would be so good though!!!

It sums up our culture though. Souffs got Latrell by bending over for his request to play FB. We did the opposite but offered somebody a good work environment. Wayne's now spent the first half of the season playing Johnston at FB (ostensibly) while protecting Latrell from any criticism. Whereas Robbo's just been praising the Morris brothers for their career best form. Go figure which model the players around them prefer!

I still think they should sack Robbo because he had a sh!t 2016 & get Wayne in to take over. Coaches who talk out of the side of their mouth are better coaches.

Great to see Robbo getting some much overdue recognition as a coach, his record speaks for itself and it's about time he was put up in the upper echelon of the best coaches in the game present and past.
He has the roosters playing a brilliant brand of attacking footy backed with steely defence which is a pleasure to watch.
Whilst Bellamy is a fantastic coach and has always got the best out of his players even the average ones I think his style will always be synonymous with some rather questionable innovations in the game i.e wrestling, chicken wings, cannonballs and such
Even the delaying of the game for injuries before dropouts seems to be his latest in his history of getting the upper hand by any means.
Robbo on the other hand has encouraged us not to dive and play the game in the right spirit and the roosters way.
I think he's a terrific ambassador for the game and we are blessed to have him and shows how sharp uncle Nick is to have recognised his ability and give a relative unknown rookie a chance in 2013.

Your right that most of them wouldn't have known but the ones signing two contracts and receiving jet skis and boats definitely knew.

I strongly believe if a club gets special salary cap dispensation because of a medical retirement if that player pulls the boots in again in a professional arena then that dispensation should be 100% revoked. It’s utter bullshit and a massive loophole for back ended contracts to get around salary cap. Personally medical retirement should not be an option - have to keep it black and white to stop the cheating.
