Sydney will host a public tribute to Rugby League Immortal Arthur Beetson on the Sydney Cricket Ground at 1pm (AEDT) on December 18.

The Sydney Roosters, Men of League, National Rugby League, Balmain Tigers and the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust will host the public event to coincide with a memorial service being held at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

Men of League Chairman, Mr Ron Coote, said today that the event was a chance for Sydney fans to say farewell to the legendary forward who will be buried after a private funeral in Brisbane tomorrow.

“He was an inspirational player and an inspirational person,” Mr Coote, his 1974-75 Premiership-winning team-mate, said today.

“The fact that Arthur was mentioned in the British Parliament is a great indication of just how well he was thought of.

“As a player he was the difference between winning and losing and I rate him up there with Wally Lewis, Andrew Johns and Darren Lockyer.”

“Like all those guys Artie was always thinking one step ahead of his opposition except he was doing it from the front row.”

The service will commence at 1 pm and will feature tributes from Indigenous leaders, former team-mates and entertainers as well as a video tribute from Channel Nine.

Channel Nine commentator Ray Warren has agreed to host what organisers hope will be a true celebration of Arthur’s incredible achievements.

Gates will open from 12pm, there is no charge for entry

Channel 9 is showing the highlights tonight between 5.30 and 6.00pm but it looks like it might be the Queensland one.

A little disappointed that Ch9 only showed highlights from the Suncorp tribute. Would've liked to have seen some of the SCG tributes as well

So was I. Recorded it and actually thought it was going to be all Sydney SCG.
A few nice pics in a Tele gallery, though. I'm in one of them, but it's a bit like "Where's Maggie".

In 1966 when Arthur Beetson came to Sydney to play for the Balmain Tigers from Roma in Qld, Aborigines were classified by the federal govt of the day as "flora and fauna"...no rights whatsoever basically.

..as William 'Smiley" Johnstone [photo 16 of the gallery] the chairman of the ARL Indigenous Council reminded us all in his speech.

In 1967 the referendum changed all that.

Yesterday Black men were crying, White men were crying, Black women were crying, White women were crying...'Big Artie' was loved by all who knew him...as the gallery shows.

After the Tribute ceremony was over we were all invited to walk on the hallowed turf of the SCG, to soak up the atmosphere of Artie's footy history and triumphs...which we did with much pleasure.

No better place for Arthur Beetson tribute

"Artie, to blacks, is Uluru," said William "Smiley" Johnstone, the chairman of the ARL Indigenous Council.
