  • For the record ....

There appears to be a general consensus that a couple of our senior players are up for retirement - or at least out the door post 2012.

For the record I'd like to state that we should be doing whatever we can to keep these players at the club and on the playing roster. The idea that they are post career really does fly in the face of what other clubs are doing to lock in their senior players. I can't imagine the Newcastle fans treating Kurt Gidley the way we have been bleating about putting mini and braith out to pasture.

I've included a list of current NRL players and their ages just as food for thought...

    35 YEARS OLD Petero Civoniceva

33 YEARS OLD Danny Buderus, Matt Orford, Joe Galuvao, Shaun Berrigan, Colin Best

32 YEARS OLD Troy Thompson, Jason Ryles, Matt Cooper, Nathan Fien, Nathan Hindmarsh, Lote Tuqiri, Fuifui Moimoi

31 YEARS OLD Luke Bailey, Casey McGuire, Ben Hornby, Scott Prince, Jeremy Smith, Ben Ross, Anthony Minichiello, Michael Crocker, John Morris, Matt King, Timana Tahu, Scott Geddes

30 YEARS OLD Nathan Friend, Brent Kite, Glenn Hall, Jason King, Gareth Ellis, Ashley Harrison,Matt Utai, Luke Burt, Clint Newton, Phil Graham, Paul Gallen, Matt Bell, Mark Taufua

29 YEARS OLD Roy Asotasi, Braith Anasta, Chris Heighington, Shane Tronc, Jamie Lyon, Mark Minichiello, Luke MacDougall, Brent Tate, Matt Bowen, Brett White, Micheal Luck, Steve Southern, Matt Hilder, Corey Parker, Nick Emmett, Justin Hodges, Kurt Gidley , Reni Maitua, Shane Shackleton, Nick Kenny, Jeff Robson, Aaron Heremaia, Wes Naiqama, Dan Tolar, Aaron Payne, Dallas Johnson.

    etc

    etc

Don't get me wrong, Everyone's entitled to their opinion - and for those pining for a Quade, SBW, Dugan apparition in 2013/4/5 accompanied with the associated premiership miracle, well, then, hallelujah! .

In the meantime, for 2012 I'll be taking my family down to the SFS and cheering (and cursing) those who have spent their careers bleeding for the RWB week in and week out.

    Easts to Win!

Captain Dogtatt bleeds red, white and blue

Mini has always been welcome in my opinion.

Guys like Civoniceva are still being considered for rep teams, and carving up.

Lockyer's a 5/8 and just retired... maybe his situation is more fair? He was captaining Australia and regularly captaining his team into the top 8. Not bagging Braith, but if he was doing that then I doubt he'd be considering retirement. Same with Mini.

Willie Wanka and Piggy Riddell picked their time to leave the NRL. I think age is just a number - if you're 35 and still either in contention for rep selection or carving up at club level then nobody's gonna ask you to leave. On the other hand if you're 30... played regular rep footy 5 years ago, are expensive and your form's similar to pretty well any run of the mill young gun at half the price (possibly due to performance/reliability hampering injuries)... your time has come.

My guess is it's a money thing too.

No salaries quoted, but as a middle manager I'm probably on more than a lot of fading stars who are subjected to public scrutiny/criticism. I don't have to keep my body in top shape, work 8:30 - 4:00 with weekends off and you've never heard of me! (I'm your average middle class... dude.)

A number of older players could probably make similar/more money without being in the public eye and putting their bodies on the line. At a lower level, Jaubs surely decided this? Braith could be some kind of consultant, do media work for Fox and either manage that restaurant/find an office job and he'd do less work/get similar/more money IMO. (Or was that Mini with the family restaurant? I forget...)

Just a thought... can't be hard for an ex NRL star to make a puck load in the corporate world, doing less work than they currently do.

Potentially ignorant question from the floor.

Does Braith Anasta have a Roosters tattoo?

No, while it would appease some and not be a bad thing, he doesn't need one

No sorry, as Billy Gunn said, its ignorant.
If you spoke to people actually involved you would know how Anasta really feels about the Roosters.

Thank you for the prompt answer, I suspect that Freddy doesn't have one either.
