Where will he play? We already have two halfbacks and a sort of 5/8th.
And he'll be 27 by the time he gets here. I think this would be a monumentally stupid idea...but then this is the Roosters we're talking about so what the hell else is new?
Have to admit to not being overly enthused on the idea. I'd prefer us to try and find some up and comer to fill the void rather than sign Maloney and find a couple of years down the track we are back where we started.
Yeah, no handstands from me :/
Keep with the development of the kids.
A bit like getting a newborn pup & training it the way you want it to behave, rather than try to re-train an animal with some bad habits.
I would have preferred we went for Carlos Tuimavave but in reality to get rid of a 31 year old and replace him with a 21 year old is probably not the smartest move. You also have to consider that Mini will be gone by this stage and the oldest and most experienced player left (so long as he is re-signed) is Perrett at 26. Next would be Mitch Aubusson at 24. That is one extremely young side and to get a premiership with a team that yound would be unheard of.
If we have signed him and he continues his good form its a pretty good move I think. He'll have one of the best forward packs in the comp rolling him forward and we've seen what he can do with that.
He does have more flair than most people give him credit for and he was extremely consistent this year.
Hopefully Pearce develops his attacking game and short kicking more next year, and I think once Maloney arrives we'll see Pearce running a bit more cos he'll know that if he gets tackled there is a competent kicking option to cover for him. Maloney's support play will also suit Pearce's running game cos he's big on offloading in the line towards the centre of the field.
What I've like to see more than anything this year is a few more set plays from us this year cos I think this is where Pearce excels. I was watching a old game from 08 the other day (vs Panthers) and some of the set plays freddy put together for those guys were very clever. When you have slow outside backs and a slow fullback you're best chance is from a set play. Not many teams venture away from simple block/sweep plays, out-in plays, and the odd dummy half wedge variation. It's getting bloody boring!!! I've seen the Panthers put together some nice set plays in recent years so maybe Elliot will bring a bit of that to the table.
I think we would all be a lot more excited if it was for 2012. All of this year people keep talking about 2013 but personally I am hoping to see us competitive in 2012. We may not win the comp but it would be good to see us develop into one of the better sides. Add Maloney to our 2012 team and we are looking pretty good.
Im not overly excited about this...signing two halves (maloney & mortimer) doesnt really make sense to me especially when we have pearce. Are they assuming one will fail?
On a positive note, at least he has goal kicking capabilities!! We dont really have any great kickers in our squad at the present do we? Who will kick for 2012? Braith?
Difference with Simon was that he was an out and out halfback, and unfortunately for him Lam was picked for Origin and his form sky rocketed from there and Simon couldnt get a look in.
In regards to Maloney, the kid is a genuine 5/8th based on his performances last year,so hopefully he compliments Pearce well and their partnership results in many wins for our club!
If this signing eventuates I think Mortimer will be fighting for the utility bench spot with Mitchell and Dumbrell.
Yep this is exactly what I was thinking. When it first seemed we would sign Mortimer nobody wanted or rated him. Then people started warming to the idea and decided he was better than Anasta. However, it seems most of conveniently forget Mortimer's recent form and the fact that we got him very cheap. He is going to be a guy that if he plays well then great, if he is not so good he will add depth and we won't have lost much. Maloney is a much better player at the moment and in my opinion a much more exciting signing (if true).
