  • Ronny Coote's house destroyed in the bushfires!

    https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/ru...ed74286cfb0c21

Rugby league legend Ron Coote has lost his home of 35 years in the bushfires and his wife was forced to jump in Lake Conjola to escape the flames.
The 75-year-old rugby great battled with hoses and water from his swimming pool to try and save his home on New Year’s Eve, to no avail.
He said the fire was moving at lightning fast speed and there was little he could do.
His wife, Robin and their daughter and a couple of friends ran down to the lake and made a split-second decision to jump in.
“We got down onto the pontoon and the flames were there, it was really scary … and I jumped in. It was daytime, but it was black — everything was black,” Mrs Coote told the Today Show.
“It (the fire) just moved that quick ... it was just flying up the trees.
“We couldn’t last much longer because as we were swimming to get to the other side of the lake the fire kept crawling up the other side … so that made it further and we never seemed to get to the end of it.”

In the end Mrs Coote was saved by a passer-by on a jet ski after spending about an hour in the lake.

Mr Coote said the fire started up on the highway, about 2.5km from his home.

“It happened so quickly, all of a sudden on top of us," he said. "We were defending there, we had fire hoses, pumps and had to use the water out of the swimming pool, then it got up into the eaves of those house … then she went up mate."

His daughter's house, next door, was also lost destroyed, along with 50 other homes in Lake Conjola, on the NSW south coast.

Mr Coote, a former Australian representative rugby league player who played for South Sydney and the Eastern Suburbs, lost everything.

“It's a bit daunting of a morning when you get up and you have no clothes to put on,” he said.

“We used to get up and go to the drawer to put something on and away you'd go, but unfortunately that's happened.

Shit - jumping into the lake to escape the fire. Glad they survived. Hate hearing they've lost their home. But Ronny will be alright won't he - does he still own a few Macca's?

Very sorry to read about this. It is yet just another example of the widespread hardship that has plagued these bushfires and this terrible summer season (with two months still to go). What extraordinary circumstances that people are facing just to survive. Quite unbelievable, really.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

Glad nobody was hurt. While people seem to love the idea of being heroes and 'staying to defend the property' IMO there's no sense in it.

FWIW I saw a video of our place going and it quite literally exploded with the 2 places next to it. Oddly, after most of the point surviving (we always assumed fires would come from the back, not from the beach as we are on the end), some grass on the side of the beach caught fire. Within seconds a massive blaze climbed the cliff and within a few more seconds houses were exploding. Fire is totally unpredictable! Had I been there with a hose I woulda been burned for sure and there's absolutely nothing I coulda done with that hose. It's sad to lose stuff but most of my important memories are stored digitally. Also, the insurance company has indicated that (on the plus side) there will definitely be enough coin for a new house (the old one was built in the 50's so go figure - great memories but we're now essentially getting a free knock-down rebuild). Just something to consider...

All that said, I totally respect that Coote woulda had some pretty darn special stuff in there (both for him and for the club) so good on him for giving it his best... I can only imagine what's special to him! He's done a lot for the game, arguably even more since retiring. Hopefully 1/2 his stuff's in a museum somewhere and he kept a bag with some of the most important stuff. Tragic!

            Hear hear...one of our legends.

Losing the home you live in is another level of loss, behind losing loved ones or pets of course.

Hope the great man and family can rebuild their lives. Sure he will.

so sorry for your loss, ISM.
I agree with your views re save yourself first
Heart goes out to your and everyone who has lost through these fires. Perhaps we should have burned down the SFS? (Joke)

                  Yes, happy you're ok.
                  You are correct...
you can't fight bushfires with a garden hose!
Mrs Coote in the lake for an hour?
                  Now that's one tough lady.
Only rescued by a passing jet ski?
                  Yikes!
No jet ski...No more Coote family.
Lives are more precious than trophies.
IMO they should've been long gone by the time the flames arrived.

Sorry to hear this, hope the family is all ok.

Ron Coote is part of my fondest childhood memories.

Sounds like they didn’t have much time to decide on their options.

Deciding to stay and defend is a big call, you need to know what your up against. If you are not sure of your plan or capabilities it’s leave and leave early.

I have done it three times, going back into the early 90’s but these recent fires are unprecedented in their intensity.

I understand your mates motivation to save his collection - but hope he is aware of what he could be facing and he gets through ok Brains.

I know he sold his Newtown Macca for a motza & then a few years later the new owners closed it down. Ronny will be alright dont worry about that.
