This question was raised a few months ago and I was surprised by the response. It seems most forum contributors are happy enough for Anasta to continue in the role. Personally, I don't think he is good enough. I really believe we need a top quality goalkicker. It can make the difference in so many matches. We all seem to want superstars in every position yet there is little concern for this crucial role in the team.
On a similar point we also seem to lack a top quality dropgoal specialist. Yes Anasta and Pearce can kick them but hardly with the same consistency as a Thurston, Soward or Lockyer.

Lets not hijack this thread with talk about what a pathetic human Carney may or may not be.
Realistically are we looking at Anasta as the goalkicker for the immediate future? Does he have room for improvement? Who is the back-up kicker?
Is Pearce working on his dropgoal skills?

To be fair to Anasta, when Carney did kick in 2011 he was little better than Anasta.
Just a pity the water boys can't kick otherwise we could utilise Fitzy in that role.
In all seriousness, I'm sure that Pearce used to goalkick regularly when he played Jersey Flegg, but haven't seen him kick since he made first grade.
Otherwise SKD or BJ need to be trained up as a goalkicker as we cannot continue to rely on Braith and Mini. Especially if we hope to put them out to pasture at the end of 2012.
Not sure if young Daniel can goalkick but the coaching staff may need to find out.
As for drop goals, I reckon you can practice them all you like but it's a completely different situation under the pressure of a game. How many times have we seen all types of players who would normally throw them over miss from in front when the pressure's on.
The only exception to that would be Lockyer and let's face it, the bloke was a freak who could do little wrong on the footy field. The footy gods smiled on this bloke right up until the end.
NCSupporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.

I thnk some may be underestimating Anasta's goal kicking ability, While he is no Daryll Halliagan or Hazem El Masri, he can certainly slot them over more often than not.
Successful/Attempts 41 / 54
Success rate 75.93%
Considering players like Benji (71%) and Corey Parker (73%) had a lower % rate and are known as full time kickers.
His Roosters Career % is 78% success, so really, he is a fair kicker.
But in saying that, if Brian Smith wants Braith to be the Full time kicker, i think it would be prudent to get someone like Graham Arnold or Daryll Halligan in to mentor braith with his goal kicking.

I'd be happy with Anasta to continue kicking next season. He kicked at 76% last season, not great but not as bad as some people are trying to make out.
A few other regular goal kickers to compare him with:
Soward - 76%
Marshall - 73%
Parker - 71%
Maloney - 75%
Thurston - 78%
Lyon - 73%
Turner - 74%
Prince - 69%
Croker - 79%
The only regulars at over 80% were Sandow (85), Burt (82), Smith (84) and Gidley (88).

Goal kicking
Roosters: Carney 2/4
Souffs: Sandow 4/4
Anasta did not kick that night
Those are the only 2 games in 2011 where the rooster lost by 6 points or less.
Goal kicking didn't even come into the equation in 2011.
And even if the Roosters won those 2 games, they still would have missed the 8 on for and against.
