  • SFS vs Sports Ground

I along like many of you have been attending games at SFS since 1988 and it's an awesome place to watch footy. But for me nothing compares to the days in the turner stand or on the hill watching my beloved roosters run around. Perhaps it ha something to do with bein young then, but the smells and the colours of the jerseys and the feeling of truly being part of something so powerful as brians army just floods my memories with total joy. I love watching games at SFS and we have had some great times there, but for those old enough to remember back that far, which do you prefer and why?

    Sports Ground for me..

Not only did we play there, but we also had our school athletics,& some Little A's carnivals there too..

The place was truly "Our House" too..We shared it with no one..

The SFS is a great place to watch footy too..But it's perfection causes a "sterileness" that the cauldron like Sports Ground could never have..

Just thinking about the Sports Ground brings out all sorts of sentimental memories..

I often stand in the car park at the SFS before games and the memories of times past flow back..

I'll stop now or i may shed a tear..

Yeah it's like when you walk down the hill at the scg, stirs up memories of semi finals and grand finals that were the only thing that mattered back then.

the sports ground was our house and we made it a bit of a fortress at times! although i still miss the scg, i played there and remember the roar of the crowd as a covering tackle brought down the winger 5 yards from the line, the strangest thing is it was me making that tackle! ive decided i just dont like getting old! probably why i continue to play golden oldies rugby in club shorts foir full contact! old hookers are all slightly mad anyway! too many scrums will do that to you?

I would prefer to be still playing at the Sports Ground.

Such great memories and history there.

I remember also when it was being built and we moved to Henson Park for awhile.. That was also a fun ground as a kid. Once it was built we went back to the sfs but I vaguely remember going back to Henson post this.... Nor sure why... Im sure we had real bad run when we did ho the new sfs, my fad used to say we moved back to Henson because of it ( jinxed).
Maybe they were going upgrades and fixes and I was just young and gullible...

I first watched the Chooks at the Sports Ground, little young to remember alot of it, we used to sit on the hill and go around to the tunnels at half time to see the players run out...oh that smell of linament reminds me solely of the Sports Ground. I feel lucky that I got to watch Easts play there as we will never have a home ground like it. I enjoy the SFS though, probably the best modern type of ground around, I would rather play there than anywhere. Saying that though I would have the Sports Ground back in an instant...

It helped that we had a great side. From 72 to 82 we would win there most times. Very rarely did I walk out of there disappointed. Remember the big Artie's army hoop that the team ran through to the tune "Here comes the roosters". the smell of dencorub, the sound of studs on concrete when they ran out, the players in their civies having a fag before the game, the skull collecting and crushing cans in front of the Turner stand. I could go on and on. It was a great club to support in those days. It's too corporate these days.

Whilst there are great memories there I am glad we are no longer at the Sports Ground.

The facilities were terrible and we would not be able to attract any corporate support.

                      I love the SFS.

Part of the appeal of the Sports ground was we could run on and pat our hero's on the back, pinch the corner posts, even the odd match ball that was dropped over the sideline after the final siren.

The Cricket Ground was also great....especially when one would release a live chicken over the picket fence onto the field on Grand final day. The coloured streamers that would blow across the ground, and players would get tangled up in them, as they ran through, or a balloon bouncing past as play continued. The flotsam was a major contributor to those stirring emotions. These days there is nothing. You cant even take flags in to some grounds.
Alcohol never solved any life problems.....then again neither did milk.

I guess the appeal of the Sports Ground, and any local ground from the past for that matter, was the unique characteristics that each ground would have to which the fans become attached. As mentioned above, it may also have something to do with the fond memories of youth as well
But the grounds these days are just so sterile (for want of a better word). There are no unique features to which the fans might develop some sort of attachment to ....Bay 1 looks like Bay38 and every other Bay inbetween.

I mean to actually watch the football these days is much more comfortable and a better view, but even though the old wooden seats of the SSG would give you a splinter, the obstructed view of support beams holding up the roof of the stand .... I still think I prefer the days of watching footy at the old Sports Ground.
