I'm delighted for Belinda Sharpe to get a top level whistleblower gig this weekend.

There have been women touch footy refs and other elite sport female referees for quite a while.

But it's an 80 minute haul of the most sustained physical team sport on the planet.

I think that she will do well, hopefully the players respect her and she doesn’t make too many stupid calls.

Good on her. My only concern is can she keep up over a long 80 mins? It’s one thing that amazes me about many of the current top refs is their speed.

No offence taken from me! Was more so chuckling inward at the term which I know is an Aussie-ism.

I remember watching the Australian Open a number of years ago and John Alexander was commentating with Navratilova when he referred to the Girls when describing the Woman’s comp. He wasn’t being a dick or anything - just speaking like an Aussie and Martina fully took exception. Said they’re not girls, they’re women which got me thinking at the time.

I now find myself stopping mid-sentence whenever I’m about to say girls when referring to grown ups with xy chromosomes.

I wonder if the gesture is noted by who ever I’m speaking with.

Refs aren't cops, but when female cops became more common it changed policing a bit.

I don't like how they trotted her out for an interview. I can't remember any other ref being interviewed before their first game and I hardly remember any refs being interviewed at all.

As long as it's a merit promotion I am happy about it.
