Bears trial win

For those interested, the North Sydney Bears won their first trial match on Sunday beating Newtown 18-16 at Wenty Park.

I went along. Unfortunately I didn't know a lot of the players without a program. And couldn't bet on the dogs...

The highlight for me though was the early form of Brock Lamb and Drew Hutchinson in the halves. Both quite slick as you would expect in this grade from two NRL players. They will ensure the Bears have a good season.

Tactically the Bears were good in their support play not too much one out stuff. Probably the JT influence there.

Potentially adding guys like Butcher, Ikuvalu, Ryan Hall, Bernie Lewis, Billy Smith, Farmer Silly, Sitili etc. should see them being very competitive for the ISP cup.

Yeah mate I like the Jets too. The Glebe Dirty Reds also played the earlier match. Ah the history...

Trial Match: North Sydney Bears v Newtown Jets
On Sunday 17 February the Bears ISP team had their first trial match of the season against the Newtown Jets at Wentworth Park.
The Bears were on fire in the first quarter, there was promising signs with Brock Lamb and Sam Verrills combining very nicely to put Kieran Moss over for the first try of the match. They again came together for Lamb to score himself minutes later.
The Jets were able to work their way back into the game as both teams started rotating players. At the half time break the Bears were leading 12-8.
Kurtis Preece was denied a try early in the third quarter with the ball coming loose over the line. The match was turning into a tussle before a Honeti Tuha breakaway run provided Kieran Moss with his second try. Tuha then converted the try which sealed an 18-16 win for the Bears.
Coach Jason Taylor was pleased with the day overall, “we certainly got out of the trial what we wanted to. We had a number of players play long minutes on what was a hot day. This will be great for the players’ fitness levels as we get closer to the start of the season.
Our start the game in attack was really sharp, disappointingly this fell away as the match went on. Defensively we showed we were understanding the things we’ve been practicing all off season. We look forward to our next hit out in a fortnight up on the Central Coast.”

I should add that Lamb and Hutchinson only played the first half. Hence the attack slipped a bit but the defence was still gritty.

Good thread. I might try to get up to North Sydney Oval and have a look one time.

Ryan Hall might well find that his first game is for the Bears, but I'm not sure he'll be playing there a lot.

I have a family member who is a qualified butcher and works in the small goods game. What it means when you say "mechanically separated" is its all the hearts,lungs, organs and offcuts of the animal that are cooked at a extreme high temperature and then the "meat" is treated with a cooking grade bleach.....any bacteria/bugs are totally eradicated.......but your still eating glorified offal. Its not just hot dogs- the biggest money spinner is supplying pepperoni for both the commercial pizza makers, supermarket pizza makers and your corner pizza store. Same process but a shitload of spices and preservatives that are made into a sausage and sliced. Moral of my boring post is avoid them all!

That's virtually a first grade side JFC - a developing one anyway. With Lachlam Lam, Curran etc on top they will come close to taking out the grand final.

Definitely Louis esp if they get some continuity in personnel.

Its a double edged sword aligning with the best NRL club. But they will see a big difference compared to the Souths rabble.

Interested to see the ISP market openers.

I would not read anything into it. the Bears played a very under strength Newtown with players from Glebe Burwood that may not make their RM side and no Cronulla players.
Doesn't mean Norths will be bad as I am sure they left a few out , plus the Roosters players.
