  • Stapo Attacked

Some foolish mortal has tried to take on our former leader and come out worse for wear, not a surprise considering whom he challenged. $2800 is chump change for Stapo so he won’t care at all.

A remorseful former NRL player who was affected by grief when he headbutted and punched a man in a Brisbane nightclub has been fined and ordered to pay compensation.

Nathan Stapleton was out celebrating the life of his late brother-in-law on August 5 when he lashed out, although his lawyer says that did not justify his actions.

The former Cronulla Sharks player's brother-in-law had died of brain cancer and he was out with his family when he assaulted the man.

Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday heard the 29-year-old and the other man exchanged words before Stapleton headbutted and punched him in the ear.

The victim suffered a small cut and bruising to his nose as well as abrasions to his left ear.

Defence lawyer Tanguy Mwilambwe said the death in the family didn't justify his client's actions but had affected him, particularly because Stapleton's mum had also died of cancer in 2013.

"He acted aggressively and violently which he shouldn't have," he said.

There was no other motive given for the incident and alcohol was not a factor.

Mr Mwilambwe said his client, who pleaded guilty to a single count of assault occasioning bodily harm, had no criminal history and his behaviour was out of character.

Magistrate Judith Daley was asked to consider imposing a fine rather than probation so Stapleton could continue to work as a business manager in a remote part of the Northern Territory.

Ms Daley said while assaults like this were "only too familiar" in inner-Brisbane, she accepted he was remorseful and the injuries were minor.

Stapleton was ordered to pay the victim $2000 in compensation and fined $800.

      No conviction was recorded.
