  • Left Side Defence

Opened up like the Sydney heads a few times in the second half last night, I sit on the right side so hard to see who was at fault. This is where Matto, Cords and Mitchell defended. I have noticed though in recent weeks that Boyd is struggling to move laterally in defence, not sure if this is a lingering effect of his bad knee, either physical or mental or just having mental lapses.

Matterson has a habit of planting his feet in defence not allowing him to react to where the ball is going. He let Hess go through a couple times yesterday simply relying on reaching out and arm-grabbing instead of leading with his feet and body.
Cordner also has a bit of a tendency to push out of the line towards the ball player which opens up the short-ball to the lead runner

I said as much in a post yesterday, though I was bit more critical of Matterson and got flamed for it.

True Ben - you;re talking about the second half wiih Hess. I noted Hess came back towards the middle a lot in that second half with other Cowboy players doubling around in his field space. I thought Matterson played quite well overall but does have that stand the ground part to his game. Otherwise he came up with some really good shots.

And we really need people running off him in that five-eighth role. Several times he dragged defenders in and it could have easily been try time had Teddy been alongside. But Tedesco played a great game and was practically everywhere anyway.. Matterson does better to totally commit the defender into the tackle, rather than just drawing the man. He has the bulk to take a couple out of the line.

That last miss on Hess was truly awful. I was on that side of the field then. I asked a mate as my eyes aren't what they used to be but good enough to tell Hess strolled through without being touched. My mate told me it was Matterson who missed Hess.....

Matto was defending wider than usual. I think next game he will
                be better for the experience.
